Hi all, I have a F-250 with a 460 big block. I am thinking about putting in a 5.4 or 4.9 liter engine and tranny to try and get better gas mileage. Right now I am getting about 8.5 mpg and I have to do something to improve my fuel economy.
Does anybody think it is worth my time and money to do an engine trade in this situation?
IMHO...I do not think it is worth doing this engine type swap. Being that your F250 is a 1994.
However, the easiest way would be to find a 5.4L donor truck...with all the parts you will need. I would try and find a donor not older than a 2001 model year.
Or better yet...replace your current engine with a 5.8L. I remember the 'ol 351's would get most drivers any where from 12-18 mpg on the highway. Still LOTS of work...but might be easier on the wallet than the 5.4L.
I have a local salvage yard that says they have a 351 with tranny for $1000 (61,000 miles). Do you know if that setup will bolt on as is or do you think I will have to weld up new mounts?

How much extra gas can you buy with that $1000 plus all the stuff you're gonna need to complete the swap? And a 351 in a 7000lb rig isn't gonna get much better than 12mpg.
well, i personnly wouldn't, if its that big of a concern, then trade it in on an older PSD, but if thats not pratical then it still isn't near costs effective to do a swap.
i owned a 1995 f350 and got a constant 10 mpg out of it, i had 35inch tires, k&n filter, high flow cat, and flowmaster muffler. but that was the best i expected and got.
even if your engine is up for a rebuild, it still is more cost effective to rebuild it then get another used smaller engine due to the fact of not knowing the history and plus having to maybe rebuild it sooner than expected, plus its still cheaper to rebuild the 460 vs buying another engine and doing the swap.
so...overall, my opinon is not to bother with the swap, not cost effective in trying to save money on gas.
