1979 Ford 250 Indy 500 Official Truck limited edition

Hello folks
I have been trying to find out info on the unusual interior and the color of the 250 I just purchased. This truck is silver (repainted, but the original color was silver also) with a black front bumper, black grille, black headliner and sun visors and has black vinyl with a soft silver vinyl inlay with red vinyl piping on the seats and doors and the FORD letters on the tailgate are on an orange background. From what I have found out this matches upto a special limited edition package that Ford offered in 1979 to match their Indy 500 Mustang Pace Car. This is a strong running longbed 250 Ranger with a 460, C6 and Dana 60. Can anyone confirm if this is a limited edition? Does anyone have pictures of these trucks? Looking for any and all info I can find on these. I bought the truck because it was a tough Ford and I needed a truck to pull a horse trailer. I am thinking of restoring it if it is a limited edition. If not I will use as is since it is in good shape.

My 77 orange f150 2wd has that same exact seat originally it had a black front bumper the dash plastic trim has orange in the center of the chrome strips that whould usually be black or wood grain same with the chrome trim on the door panels My dad bought the truck new so I know the history of it. It had what was called a FREE WHEELING package which came in yellow orange black silver and maybe red im not sure about other colors. The major exterior thing is It has 5 different stripes (big sticker or decal) down the side where a normal second part of 2 tone paint would be. The colors of the stripes going down fromthe top start as yellow then medium orange then red then dark red then dark blue at the bottom. I will have pictures in the gallery for all to see. In 78 or 79 the big decal didnt have solid stripes instead it had a faded into each color sequence.

I've owned one of these trucks in the F-150 since 1982. It still has the stripe package on the outside. The inside is still original too. I have been trying for over a year now to find the decal kit for a restoration. If you guys have any ideas let me know.

Try a sign company that deals in vinyl letters, or a detailing company that does pinstriping. I'm sure with little work it could be duplicated.

Well I have found out more inforamtion on these trucks that I would like to pass on. Check out the Mustang Official Registry of Pace Cars site for the 1979 Pace car information and go to the bottom ogf the page. (http://mustangpaceregistry.stangnet.com/custom.html)
You will find pictures of the 1979 Offical Truck of the Indy 500 and a short write up. I have spoken with Bill Puck of the registry and he is in the process of replicating the offical truck to use to tow his pace car replica to shows. His email address is bpuck@schemmer.com. Bill has a set of the original decals and has a decal shop working to make duplicates. Bill should be receiving the first full set of replicated decals this week for trial. He told me they should run around $500 a set and be available soon. These folks at the Mustang pace car site are also working with Ford to determine how many of these trucks were built and create a list of VIN numbers so that original trucks can be verified. This will probably take a while because someone has to go through ever build order for 1979 trucks and check for this option package. These are some good folks at the pace car site and they do love their FORDS!

I have also spoken with the former owner of my truck and he confirmed that it was a limited edition Indy 500 truck. He is looking in the weeds behind his barn to see if the original roll/light bar is still there that he took off this truck when he painted it. He is also trying to find the name of the original owner so I can talk with him.

ox9609 if you read this drop Bill an email the more people that want these decals the better.

jowilker who do I send pictures to for posting??

I don't know who made them for Ford originally but Bill over at the Mustang Registry might. I also found out from Fritz at the stang site that this interior was offered as part of the "Free Wheelin" package for sevral years so this might be a source for interior parts, seats, etc. Looks like Ford took the "Free Wheeling" interior and a special paint scheme with the decals plus some other optional parts and put them togather to make the "Offical Truck" package.
