Intermittent problem....no codes....????

Ok so heres the deal. On my daily driver a 93 w/302 mostly stock with a E4OD.....with a slight load on the engine...at light to moderate throttle I am getting a sort of surging......like as if I was modulating the gas pedal up and down slightly.....thats about the best way I can describe it. It dont seem to matter much if the truck is warmed up or not, but the ambient temp may have something to do with it.....I dont remember it happening in the summer????

I already checked for codes....but got 11's. I also removed the IAC and gave it a good douching with TB cleaner, but didnt notice any diference..I even switched the brand & octane rating of fuel I use........but I can still feel it.

It is intermitant....meaning I can not ALWAYS make it happen exactly when I want.

Anyone got any ideas?

Odd problem Steve, your good at trouble shooting these rigs, your truck wont have you stumped for long.
I guess I would check fuel pressure at the rail.
Or Maybe a injector is starting to go south.
Its a guess right now untill it starts to get worse.

I'm with MinnMan on the fuel pressure. The FPR is just about the only component under the hood that doesn't have some sort of direct monitoring by the computer.

I've also heard of a similar set of symptoms generated by the collapse of the PCV hose from the valve to the intake. If oil gets in there and softens the rubber the vacuum can suck it closed.

It is sort of faint..the sort of thing a person may not even notice if they were not driving the rig every day.

Oh....and I forgot to tell you guys that I already changed out the little purge valve that allows the emissions canister to get dumped into the intake......that was all my idea though, after searching and reading through the forums........I thought it helped for a bit anyway....???
Here you can see the part I am talking about in the extreme upper left corner of the pic.

.....I will have to keep looking. My plan right now is to change out the fuel filter (been in service for like 17K now) and check the fuel pressure at the rail. I have access to a shop/lift, but with all the snow (we got like 22 inches in 24 hours Sunday) I have not had too much time to do anything but drive our F250 Plow truck......it is nice when this one storm can save...or even make a season for a guy with a plow, because up till now....we didn't have hardly any snow at all???

Thanks guys......and keep the tips coming!

Are you sure its not a tranny problem? Don't know a whole lot about automatics, but a varying load on the engine would probably cause what your describing. I had a similar problem on a '94 5.8L E4OD. The torque converter was slipping. A local tranny shop put in an additive that worked for a while, but she gave up the ghost when I pulled a small travel trailer.

Maybe the FPR is leaking fuel directly into the intake manifold through the vacuum hose....?

IS THERE KNOCKING OR PINGING UNDER LOAD??? i HAVE THE SAME DANG ISSUE AND THE TRUCK THROWS CODE 33 WITHOUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. I HAVE A FEELING THAT IT IS THE ANTI-KNOCK SENSOR ON MY TRUCK BUT YOUR DESCRIPTION IS EXACTLY HOW MINE IS ACTING UP. THE GAS PEDDLE ALMOST HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN.

surging the dance

wow. u guys have the same problem. when i start to move, with the gas pedal on ever so slightly, the truck moves ahead, then backs down, moves ahead, and backs down. after reading all this stuff and more, i am beginning to think it is a vacuum problem. i have a 96 351 4eaod. this has been happening for over 100,000 miles and has never changed. i have changed the truck stuff, tune up, fuel pump, new mass air sensors, cleaned the k&n filter, changed all the fluids and the powertrain, even the tranny flush. the engine has never broken. it has 200,000 miles on it now, runs pretty good. but there is that "weird" thing you guys all describe! my mods are the filter, jet chip and that "tornado" throttle body kit. i have a supercoil on there as well...
the vaccum was checked and it comes out fine. but like you said, maybe the cannister is done....

Ended out being a bad knock sensor. You can check it by pinging the intake ever so slightly and see the reaction while plugged into a computer. The knock sensor eliminates response from the gas peddle (throttle) to eliminate any potential or further catastrophic engine failure. I fixed it and then sold the truck since gas prices started going up and bought a car that gets better gas milage......now in hindsight, I miss it and surely wish I still had it. Hope this helps you out in some way...sniff, sniff!
