I'm looking at a 97 F350 psd crewcab 4x4, auto. Its the original owner, just under 100,000 miles, asking $11,500. Its a very solid truck, seems like he's taken good care of it. The tranny issue is what scares me a bit. The truck doesn't have a tow package, so he's never towed anything heavy. He mentioned most of the miles are local(city) miles, not highway. The price seems good, the truck is very nice, mostly stock. I'm looking for a do everything truck, large enough for the whole family to ride in, yet reasonably priced.
What do you guys think of a tranny that hasn't seen alot of pulling, but alot of city miles? I've also been told the 97 tranny was a bit better than past years?
Thanks in advance, you guys are a fountain of knowledge. Ed
That's not a bad price I paid $10,500 for my 97 PSD crewcab 4x4 auto. And mine had 170,000 miles on it. If you look at my gallery you'll see my truck the only thing I did was put the tires & rims on it. I love it.. it was my first diesel truck and I'm not looking back. If you ask me that's a good price. I've had mine for 1 1/2 yrs now and no tranny problems. When you buy it make sure you get a 3" downpipe and a tymar intake. I had mine for all that time and I finally installed it last weekend what a difference it made!!
Just a side note. I'm not a millionare but make enough I could afford (well almost, who needs electricty anyways) a new 6L PSD but I just love my truck. I get tons of ppl offering to buy my truck I even got a $18k offer for it. Remember they don't make that body style anymore!! Your not going to find a 99-03 at that price with those miles and options ( I don't think so anyways)

I paid 15K for my F350 CC, XLT, 104K miles, factory paint, 1 owner in Jan 2002. Its got 172K miles now. I tow when I need to. I changed the trans fluid at 150K (the trucks 1st fluid change). The original owner towed a gooseneck several times a year. Still going strong, but you never know. If the truck is in good shape, you may be ok.
thanks guys, I'm thinking if I can get into if for 10,500 or 11,000 it would be a good solid truck for a long time, for the right price. One other question, the truck I'm interested in was manufactured in 11/97. Is there any differences in late 97s vs. early 97s?
I drivethe same truck got mine for 4K but it needed some work. I would never buy an auto if Iwere doing it again. Ihate!!only having 4 gears! atruck is for working ,plling big loads and such and an auto just plan sucks at.. ... as far as iknow ther is no differance in the early and late 97's. j
sorry to hijack this but what are you guys getting for mpg with yours. i have been looking into 96-97 cc 4x4 and was curious. i currently own a grandcherokee that gets 14 in town and 18hwy. it get less then 10 pulling my 18' rv. need help
That sounds like a great price for that truck and I think you'd be happy with it. For comparison I bought my 97 f250 supercab for 11 and it had 114000 miles on it. It bluebooked much higher than that so I'm sure the one you're looking at blue books way higher than what they're asking for it. No probs with the tranny on my truck still original tranny and drives fine....

if it is clean and needs only minor things it is a steal.. i will tell you that theseolder trans do need to be rebuilt.. but not all of them. and they last alot longer than these new tourque shifts before needing repairs.
i would pay that even if it neede a trans after a short bit. change the trans fluid and filter after you 1st get it.. mine is stock w/ ony 165K. got gauges, external filter, cool max and changed the fluid 2x in the 1st 5K when i got it. also have the transcommand. works welland i thinkl the transcommand or sonnax will extend life of the clutches.
