I have a '67 with a 9" rear end. As far as I know, the fluid has never been changed. There is no drain plug, and I can't get a sucker hose past the ring gear to pull the pold stuff out. Is fluid replacement needed? Other than pulling the 3rd member out, how can it be done?
well, i may get pooped on for saying this, but one time i just dropped the drive shaft and removed the pinion retainer to drain my gear oil....seemed to work well...you'll just have to check the bearing that the nose of the pinion goes in , because another time i had a bad bearing and all the rollers fell out..
Yes, the drain plug went in when the R&P and tru-trac went in. I think I used a 1/2x13 plumbing plug with the recess for an allen wrench. These have a taper built in for sealing and very little is below the bottom of the housing, just a thread or two. It's placed just off center to the passenger side and works like a charm. I think you could also use just a regular bolt if you don't go off-road, I didn't want to take a chance on draggin' it across something and losing the head. The only way to really do the fluid change is to pull the 3rd member and clean out the bottom of the housing, it's amazing how much "junk" builds up in there even when doing regular fluid changes with the suction pump method-been there, done that (like to drive thru them deep puddles now and again), and would advise anyone with the niner to add the drain plug whenever the rear is apart for any reason!
I made a drain plug for the versailles 9" that went into the 66 mustang. 2" od by 1/2" thick steel, welded to the housing when the third member was out. Works like a charm.
