My 4L drive light would never come on until I read some of your letters suggesting to put the gear shift into neutral first to engage the 4L and yes the light finally came on. How does one find out if the 4x4 engages and actually working properly without taking it to 4x4 terrain? Will the shift into 4L & 4H be felt by the driver when 4x4 is engaged? Thank you!
Put it in 4L , you'll feel the gear reduction if it's engaging. Also make a sharp turn on pavement going from a stopped position , you'll feel the truck want to buck. Another sure sign the 4x is engaged.
Last but not least , have a buddy watch the front drive line as you move the rig in 4x. If the transfercase is engaging , it will be turning.
Just remember that the hubs could also be BO if you are having problems with the 4x4 , but the light will work even if the hubs are fried.
I don't want to steal this thread but one question. When should one use 4 L. I have just used 4 H and never had a problem yet so I am guessing it would need to get kinda rough to need the 4 Low.
4Low is for crawling , steep inclines , very rocky trails , etc. Most of the time I never use it either , but it sure is handy when I am pulling my boat up the ramp at the lake.
I don't have to worry about slipping the clutch any!
Thank you, I do hear a clicking. I also discovered that to get the light to come on for the 4L, you have to depress the brakes, put in the clutch and have it in first gear simultaneously to get it to engage. Thanks again, I appreciate it!
