My 1999 4.2l also makes that infamous ticking sound. You can really hear it if you stick your head in the front wheel well. I was told it was a leaking exhaust manifold. Would I need to replace the manifold or is it alright to leave it as is?
I'm assuming the manifold is cracked. The crack will only get worse and the noise will get louder. Replacing the manifold is the prudent thing to do.
Could be a gasket, but if they said the manifold had to be replaced I suspect the manifold is cracked. Sometimes they are hard to see because of where the crack is located. You may have use a mirror to look between the manifold and the engine if nothing is apparent. Replaced one a couple of weeks ago on the driver's side. You could hear the leak but couldn't see anything. Initially thought it was a gasket. Once the manifold was off you could see the crack.
