I Have A F250 4x4. I Have To Change The Studs In One Side OF THE REAREND. For Some Reason They Have Reverse Threads On That Side. It Is A Full Floating Rearend. How Much Is Involved Before I Tackle This Job. I Will Go Ahead And Change The Brakes While Im There.
I just did my 81 f250, its real easy if you have a shop press. You could try using a hammer to drive them in and out. In my experience with other vechicles it is hard to get them fully seated without a press.
The press makes it easier, but if you soak them real good with some penetrating lube, you can beat them out with a hammer. I have seen a tool used by tire shops to install studs, it was like a sleeve with a lug nut, that they tightened and it pulled the stud through the hub. I imagine you could do it with some washers and a lug nut as well.
Getting the stud out is the easy part, rarely have to work too hard getting them out with a 3 lb hammer... I use the lug nut to pull the stud back through, like stated, use something for a spacer, then draw it through.
I have done this on every vehicle i have ever put studs on. First soak the studs with some penetrant. Then get a hammer like a 3 pounder and hit the old stud out. Then you will put the new stud in that hole. Sometimes you will need to grind off a side of the stud top to make it fit in. If you do this do not grind all the way to the actual stud. Then get washers to put on the outside so that when you put the lug nut on it does not hit the none threaded part of the stud then get an impact gun and impact it until the stud is all the way seated. If you do not have an impact gun then you could just use your wheel wrench.
ok thanks for the help. im going to try this weekend. the only part that im a little worried about is taking out the axel to pull the hub. is there a special tool to get it off.
