'To Be(er) Or Not To Be(er)-That is the Question'

I have an ancient Hoover bar refigerator (yeah-Hoover, the suction specialists) in the shop that must be 20+ years old. I've heard tell it is easier on the motor/compressor to keep the frig full as the additional mass retains cold and produces fewer cycles. Is this true or just one more urban myth? If true, how does one keep a sufficient quantity of beer in the frig? Some Mass Law of Consumption must be at work as the amount of beer stored is equal to the amount of beer consummed.

From the Pro's

Temperature Settings
A temperature of 38 F to 40 F is generally recommended for refrigerators and 0 F for freezers. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, but check these settings by placing a thermometer in both sections.

Contents Arrangement
Food retains cold better than air, so keep units as full as possible but don't overcrowd so air can circulate freely. For the freezer compartment, stack items tightly. Add extra bags of ice if you don't have enough food packages.

Pepsi? You could put a keg in there with the tap on the outside, then you wouldn't have to open the door every 10 minutes. That would be easy on the compressor and no cans to pile up.

A "fridg" does not put cold in, it takes heat (thermal energy) out. But it uses electrically powered energy to do that. So, if the box is full now the energy to remove the heat from that mass has already been expended. If the refridgerator is empty don't fill it and expect a net energy savings. After the energy has been expended to remove the heat it is largly a matter of how well the box is insulated and how many times you open it allowing heat to return. Heat will always try to return, laws of thermal dynamics. Me, I don't worry about it. Physics doesn't, or shouldn't, apply to cold beer. Fill it up, turn it down low, just above freezing and pass it around on a hot day. If the thing goes on the blink, go down to Sears and get another box, they are pretty cheap these days.

Remember one thing... Beer and power tools can be a dangerous combination!

Keep it safe! -Drink Pepsi, or Coke, or ...

Actually the beer is better for you on a hot day than the soft drink as far as electrolytes go.

-so many choices, so little time! :-)

Beer is not better for you -- alcohol dehydrates the body. :-X23

Water or a sports drink would be best!

Of course, I don't take my own advice. Wrenches don't turn right unless I have a Bud in my other hand

'To Be(er) Or Not To Be(er)-That is the Question'

Somebody start a poll here about the best "garage beer".

Hey mil1lion, I dig those Canadian beers, especially Fosters and Killian's. I mean, if all you're doing is working under the hood, then why not have a friend over, listen to some ROCK, and wrench on the Ford. Let's start a pre-poll here to get an idea of what kinda beers people prefer when in command of the ratchet. I'd get one going, but I can think of about 115 world class beers that might be of interest to this world-class, and nationally diverse crowd! Obviously, you'll have to wait to wait on the road test if you partake, but as long as you don't leave the driveway, I can't think of a better way to spend time with the guys. Think about it, spend an evening on the town, go to a bar, and what have you accomplished? Now, spend your money on auto parts, get a 12 pack at the store, and at the end of the night, you've actually done something productive, and invested money in your truck. I beleive that the more time you spend on your truck, the more attached you become to it. Anyway, Beer poll fellas, lemme know what y'all think. TK

Hey, I dig the Newcastle, but the supreme (to me, anyways) is the Irish beer! I am an avid fan of Murphy's, Guinness, Murphy's Irish Amber, Caffrey's, and even Killians, though it's a bit light-bodied. I guess I'm not supposed to know that Foster's and Killian's are brewed by Molsen (dad works for Heineken, I'm an insider), but they're actually very good.

I don't keep beer in the garage. My wife claims that the only quality time she gets is when I come in from the garage for a beer.
