How to remove 50 year old hardened, caked oil?
Well I never did get around to trying diesel fuel, but I did try the ATF, including on two stuck pistons. No dice, the ATF didn't touch either the grease or the corrosion holding those two pistons in their bores.
The lye and detergent worked best on the grease. And I used PB Blaster and a 5 lb sledge hammer on the pistons. I was happy when I finally got those two buggers out.
Lye is a caustic agent like the oven cleaner. I couldn't find any oven cleaner or I would have tried that, too.
Oh, and watch out when using lye on a concrete driveway. I had it mixed pretty strong and etched my driveway.:-X23

A chunk of landscape timber the right diameter and a 10# sledge will knock out pistons fast. For a little lube I have used good old WD or some CRC Power Lube. Just make sure you don't miss the timber...
ATF takes a long time to soak in to heavy grease.
Ever try a flamethrower? -hehe

find somebody who works on industrial power generators. they have something we used some 5 years ago that is bluish in color, water flushable, and will "dissolve granite". all i know is that we had it from a buddy that worked as an elctrician on power generators in WA.

if youve got an old oven you dont care to trash put your parts in a big pan (make sur the rack can holds the wheight) and either broil them to dry the crap out (i dont really think this would work that well but worth a shot) or use a big pan and boil it loose.

I'm not sure if LPS makes it or if it CRC, but the stuff is called presolve. Smells like oranges. Stuff takes anything off, but won't hurt paint. My dad used it while cleaning up his 70 vette. all original, preserved by the oil and grease it leaked! After he scrubbed that all off, he used brake parts cleaner to get the rest off and prep it for paint.

ok, here goes.1)gas? too effin flammable. don`t even think about it.2)spirits?same deal. 3)deisel fuel, stinks like hell, but works well on warmer metals(over 60 degrees)4) atf/ps fluid, works as a beautiful, solvent in warmer temps. 5)NAPALM, WILL CURE ANY AND ALL PROBLEMS YOU MAY HAVE. drivability an issue though.6)scrape it, scrape it, scrape it. good luck.

I have found that kerosene works pretty good. For really bad caked on crap I would soak it for about an hour and then use a angle grinder with a wire wheel. Takes it all off.
