Reverse thread lug nuts?

I just bought a dana 70 from a 70s f-350 and the wheel studs are reverse thread on one side regular on the other side, what's the deal?

We just had 3 other dana 70's that wee set up the same way. All of them were out of ford trucks originally. Thought it was only a dodge and jeep thing. Oh well with 8 swift blows of the hammer they are outa here.

i've heard many theory's behind it but the most prevelant on is so that they don't loosen up over time with the rotation of the tire.. don't ask me to make that statement make sense- that's just what i've heard!! i think they did it just to irritate the living ***** out of people.... lol

it made sense with single nut hubs. Now with multiple nuts, its just engineering inertia.

Old Army trucks are the same way and I was always told that it would keep them from coming off.
