This doesn't really apply to Fords but to Europe.

My GFs dad owns a '72 MGB GT (92k original) with a metallic green (originally BRG) re-painted in England.

What I want to find out is would this be a Laquer or a Clear coat finish?

It needs buffed as it has sat for 15 years (in storage) and I don't want to hurt the finish by using the wrong type of polishing compound.

MGB's are impressive little cars.

The big thing is that it has been repainted. It would have originally been painted using lacquer, but seing it was repainted it makes it a bit more of a difficult one.
One that I honestly don't know.

The only difference I know (visually) between the 2 is that a clear coat will look a little deeper than a lacquer.

 

The re paint is over 25 years old and repainted before shipping it over to the States, (he has totalled this car half a dozen times).

It is a metallic type paint, and it will be re-painted BRG within the next year and then will have a clearcoat, but I'm not too sure as it is really faded and and that is why I'm not too sure.

 

Try a small bit of the compound inside one of the door jambs, or in some area that won't show. Best advice I can offer you there...

The guys are correct. It could have been painted with ANYTHING, not least because it's metallic.....
We could guess based on how upscale the shop was that did the work but it'd still only be a guess. The advice to try compound on an inconspicuous area would be my first choice.
One other thing, and this particularly applies to repaints is that with clear-coat (esp. metallic) you can often tell just by looking *really* closely because of the depth of the clear on top of the colour.
Shop manuals.... are you looking for somethimng really specialised like a refurb manual or will a Haynes do? If the latter try amazon. They'll get it for you no problem.

I'm looking for books in the area of tune ups, along with something that'll aid in a restoration, he won't go for anything of the American production, he has all his parts shipped over from England, that and the only local MG guy retired in Oct. so he needs a mechanic that knows these cars, thus I'm trying to find detailed refrence books for it.

 

Tell me about it, I have to have all of my parts shipped over from the USA....and this despite my vehicle being an official Ford import to the UK!
Anyway, there are probably some specialist books out there on MGB restoration. If I find any I'll let you know.
Meanwhile you can narrow your search by going to amazon.co.uk instead of the American site, that should give you more British content.

Given this, it doesn't appear keeping the thing 100% original, whether paint or mechanics, is much of an issue. Be happy it rolls and runs.

I believe that they sell a lot of original BMC parts imported from England. (Judging by the prices, that's probably a safe bet!)
He might want to confirm before ordering any parts if he's that hung up on it.

I've had British cars since I was 14 and for my Sunbeams, American-made reproduction parts are sometimes not only the only thing available but are often superior in quality to the originals.

Oh well, to each his own...now for a spot of tea and a crumpet.
