The B3000 has only rear ABS correct? I was wondering what it would take to install full ABS like on the B4000 or 4.0 Rangers. I have 32x11.50 MTs and my stopping distance has almost doubled. Short of an Explorer 8.8 swap this is the next best thing i can think of. Any opinions are welcome.
More ABS is probably not the answer, since its purpose is not really to shorten braking distance. Instead, ABS is meant to provide the driver with more control when traction is either compromised or lost. In some cases, ABS will even increase braking distance.
I see. What other options do i have? Ive heard of Brake Proportioners or something like that that adjust the Front:Back ratio. I dont have the time or the resources for an Explorer 8.8 swap yet. Anything else?
Are you not stopping because you're locking the tires, or because you can't lock the tires?
Are you sure the brakes you have are in good shape? That might be the place to start.
Think of it a lever on a nut on the end of the axle. If you had a socket wrench on the nut you could trurn it with a given force. Now put a breaker bar on and you can turn it with more force. Well the distance from the center of the axel to the edge of the tire was x. Now you have added bigger tires and the distance from the center to the edge of the tire is x + what you added. So the brakes must work harder to overcome the additional force you are adding. The real answer is better (bigger) brakes.

I understand the reason and the physics of my problem. And i serviced my brakes (pads and new rear cylinders) about 2000 miles ago. I was wondering if there is anything other than smaller tires that will help me stop shorter. I think even my parking brake doesnt like the larger tires. I was thinking about the driveshaft mounted parking brake but im pretty sure i dont need it. Ive also noticed my rear tires locking up at really low speeds (parking lots) when its wet but ive noticed others have this same experience and im shruging it off. Ive also considered the idea that maybe my ABS is working only sometimes.
Does it lock up and stay locked up? I think it's normal for it to lock up momentarily.
How are your shocks? If you nose is diving during panic braking, all your weight comes off the rear end and you lock them up easier.
Momentary lock up and i was pretty sure it was normal. I did shock just about the same time i did my brakes. I know this is gonna open up a can of worms but does any one have experience with like drilled and slotted or other types of rotors? Id prefer experience over theory and opinion.
For testing purposes, try pulling the fuse for the ABS. That will disable the ABS and allow you to get an idea of what the basic hydraulic brakes feel like on the truck. You will then at least have a starting off point, something you can make comparisons against.
BTW, are you sure your '99 4x4 doesn't have 4WABS? How many brake lines are there coming off of the hydraulic control unit (HCU) located under the hood?
Ive checked it. Theres only one line in the other line goes straight to the front brakes. Im pretty sure thats what i saw. I was wondering about larger front rotors. Does anyone know offhand what size the stock rotors are? Whats the largest i could go to if i have 15" stock rims?
