smoking 01 powerstroke

I hope some of you powerstroke experts have an answer to my problem. My 01 f-450 will fall on it's face and blow white smoke out the exh. when accelerating but only between 2000 and 2500 rpm.I have had this same type of problem with Cat truck engines and it was always an injection timing issue. Ford dealer says they "think" $4500 worth of injectors will fix the problem. could a cam or crank sensor be causing this problem? eng. idles fine and is fine at highway speed.

$4500.00 for injectors???
Contact www.blackclouddiesel.com . One of our sponsors here on FTE. They carry Beans Diesel Performance injectors. You'll save almost $3000.00.
Most likely your smoking problem is one of the o-rings that seal up the injectors are getting worn out and need to be replaced, not the whole injector.
Doing the job yourself is not that hard if you are careful and have the tools.

Whoa, hold on. Lets start simple, but somewhere many over look. Honestly have you changed the fuel filter and run some DFA through it?

Thank you Fire Rooster. The KISS principle applies.

changing fuel filter made no difference. have been using howes additive all winter but it does not help the smoke.$4500 was parts and labor.I thought that was way out of line thats why I'm here.what special tools are needed to pull injectors?

Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts 01smoker.

There are no special tools needed to replace the injectors. Common hand tools and a couple of little prybars are all you need.

Did the dealer tell you what codes they pulled or what tests they ran to determine the injectors are all bad? That information might be useful in determining weather or not you want them working on your rig.

took truck to a truck only dealer the only one in K.C. Mo. I have no Idea what diagnostic tests were done. I was told that #2 injector was definately bad but that they suspected that injectors have had water run through them.I only let them replace the #2 injector which did not fix the problem.they say unless the other seven injectors are replaced it will smoke. this dealer also said that engine needs to be replaced because blowby is at the limit.this eng. runs too good to replace. It uses no oil between changes.no I do not trust this dealer that is why I am posting on this forum so I can fix it myself.

I would want to know exactly what diagnostic were performed and what the results were that led them to the injectors. For me, if they were hesitant to share this information I would operate under the assumption that somebody was trying to get my money.....or that they were just guessing. Either way, it's not somebody I would want to do business with. JMO.

I am 100% in agreement here. You paid dearly for the diagnosis and you are entitled to the information gathered from that diagnosis.

Yeah, definately take it to another shop that can run some injector testing on it. Most places I have talked to charge 50 bucks to do a full on diagnostic. Just plug their fancy reader in and hit the go button, about 15 min later all test are done. Sounds to me like the injector orings on one or more of the injectors is bad. I'd have someone run the test for you, if all good, order up a set of new orings and slap em in.
