01, 7.3 PSD, Excursion, Where is fuel filter?
#2
A big pan to catch the fuel, place it under the engine a little to the passenger side of center.
Open the hood and remove the "7.3" plastic cover in the top center of the engine. Climb up and look straight down to what it covered. The round fuel filter housing will be visible. Look on the back side of the housing and see a yellow housing with a lever on it. Turn the lever so it points straight back. Jump down and adjust the big pan to the best position to catch all the fuel running down. Yes it makes a mess. A lot of us put a piece of fuel line on the end of the filter bowl drain to extend it down past the frame. Makes for a cleaner job. When the fuel quits draining, climb back up and close the drain. Get two very large screwdrivers, (like two feet long) or something equivelent and us them in an X pattern to remove the top of the fuel filter housing. It unscrews like a giant mayonnaise jar cap. Underneath you will find the filter cartridge. Replace it using all the o-rings supplied with the filter kit. Use extra care to get the large outer seal placed just right as you are re-installing the filter housing cap. Easy to make a leak if you don't get it right.
The cap nuts that hold on the trim piece require a 13mm deep socket or a wrench.

under the hood, looking from the front, there is a black plastic cover on top of the engine that says "powerstroke" on it. below and behind that is a circular object with a lid and a small yellow valve on the back. this is the fuel filter. to remove the filter, you first have to remove the cap with either a filter wrench ( a large one, it is pretty big diameter) or a custom filter wrench from www.dieselsite.com . after that, just pull the filter up and out, it isnt secured on anything but the seal. ill look for a picture if you need help.
dang kwikkordead you beat me to it

I found some on ebay that had the lid integrated onto the filter. Including shipping, they came out to a couple bucks more that the filter itself or about $20 each. I had read of people having problems with getting the gaskets on correctly when replacing just the filter. There are plenty of responses, though, that say if you just pay attention, it is no problem. But, I went the easy route. If you do go with filters with the integrated lids, keep your old lid just in case you go back.
A neat thing about the ones I got is that there is a spot to tighten them with a 1/2" socket. Very simple. I used my oil filter wrench to unscrew my original filter lid as I could not apply enough hand pressure and I had read about someone else using the filter wrench. Did not try the two screwdriver thing. Hope this helps.
