I have a 66 F-100 SWB 4X4 with a 352 4spd, and I want to put in a 460 from a 73 F-350 2WD. What can anyone tell me about possibility of sucess, or supprises I might run into? Especially concerned about making electronic ignition work on the 66 useing the parts from the other truck, but would be grateful for any help. Also concerned about the newer truck having auto trans. want to keep the 4spd
Eric, Welcome to FTE The best site on the net for Ford trucks.
I think you are wanting a very do-able swap. This is not an easy swap, but with proper planning should go off pretty easy. The ignition upgrade is straight forward with many articles on it.
The big rub is two different engine families. The 352 is a FE and has a round top bell. The 460 is a 385 family engine and it has a flat top bell like the 302s, 351Ws, and I-6s, but is taller with the bolt holes about 8" apart wnd the other about 5.
It might save you a lot to rebuild your engine or replace it with a 390. IMHO
The only major issues will be to find a set of motor mounts to fit. It may take some custom units. The 4x4 frames use a entirely different intermediate unit and frame tower than the 2 wheel drive units.
You will also need ot obtain a Big block bell housing, dont worry there plentifull, the 351 M 400 family that inhabits about a million trucks in yards is the same bolt pattern as the 460.
there will also need to be scrounged up the engine side mount for the clutch Z bar. it will probally have to be febricated unless you find a four speed donor in a yard.
The Duraspark is very simple to do. when oyu get closer to doing that we can talk you through it. 2 wires to the ignition switch and the rest to the dizzy..
