i am in the process of changing the oil pan gasket and rear main seal. i have the oil pan loose and sitting on the cross member, but how do i get it out? i guess the pick-up tube is preventing me from getting it out. what are my options? any and all help is needed. by the way i have the flywheel inspection cover off too, i thought it might help in getting pan off......not so much.
thank, tgowers
You have to unbolt and jack up the engine. You can use either an engine hoist or a jack with a wooden block on the front crank pulley.
U are lucky, on my 91 FORD CV 302 Wagon i had to jack up the engine, unbolt the motor mounts, remove the AOD trans, drop the oil pan down a little then reach inside the pan and unbolt the oil pump and pick-up tube, drop the oil pan with the pick-up tube inside,,,,U R LUCKY GOOD LUCK,,DAHMER
It scares the hell out of me to hear about lifting the motor by jack by the crank pulley or damper, besides bending crank the motor may rotate and pop out the jack. Remove the nuts from the motor mount to perches, add wood across the front pan rail and jack up hign as you can without breaking throttle linkage then add wood under the motor mounts. Remove the dizzy, unbolt the pump then pan and pump should slide out. You may have to rotate the crank to clear the counter weights.

Also, make sure you've got plenty of clearance between the fan and the shroud. You may wanna just unbolt the fan shroud and hang it over the fan. I've seen people crack 'em jacking up the engine.
Good point as I forgot the fan and shroud, that shroud will be brittle from heat and age. I can hear it now, your below cranking on the jack then a loud snapping sound, "what was that? Oops.
Disconnect motor mounts 1 bolt each side, use a chain and bolt the chain onto front of engine. Take off fan shroud hang on fan so it doesn't get broken. Lift engine up about 2-3" oil pan slides out.
Pretty quick.

Just out of curiousity...How difficult is it to change out the motor mounts while the engine is up like that? Mine are the consistency of marshmallows right now and I have to jack up the engine to put my passenger side header in. I figured...while I have it up....
I had to lift the motor one side at a time to install the headers (Thorley's) at that time replaced motor mounts. Had to add a 1/8" thick washer under each perch stud for header clearance. Make darn sure the motor is secure when lifted.
