Propane/Gas engines

My '78 F150 is running gasoline currently, but a partial propane system is installed. A previous owner removed the tank and lines. I'm considering hooking it back up. My question is, as far as cost per mile is concerned, how does propane compare to gasoline?

I have heard that higher compression ratio is possible and special valves are recommended.

Even with the higher CR, I don't think the same power is there.

Propane/Gas engines

The dual fuel systems are JUNK and not worth the hassel having, I should know as I owned one and my engine caught fire. The carbs gaskets dry out from the propane carb starts weeping fuel out the gaskets. Mine flooded and poured gas all over the top of the engine and poof fire.

Pull all that crap off and mount a standard remaned carb and be done with it. The only propane system that is good is the straight propane carb and only runs LPG. You will notice a real drop in power and fuel consumption goes up because the engine is working harder.

I have had two propane powered trucks and converted them back to gas because I hated how they performed.

Propane/Gas engines

all the above. lp used to econo but now that is expensive too
my 78 350 w/ a 460 used to run on lp and back in the day it was cheap and enviro.safe but i have since then changed it back to good ole go go juice and it doesnt compair. I personaly would not bother with it for the cost of an oil change to be able to haul heavy loads or get on with the show and any other problems that are asso. with lps.

From the responses above, and based on the research I've done, the lp system will have a new home on the garage wall. Thanks guys!
