Computer ?????

My cousin decided she wanted another computer so she pulled a bunch of wires out of her computer so that her mom would buy her a new one. I have the one she pulled the wires out of and would like to fix it up and use it. It is a Compaq Presario 5000 series. The wires that she pulled are not broken just pulled out of the plastic that plugs into the motherboard for the power switch. These are the wires that were pulled out. Everything else seems intact. Does anyone know how these wires are supposed to go back or know where I can find a schematic to put these wires back? Also, on the motherboard where said wires plug into, there are two slots, one is where the switch plugs into, does anyone know if anything is supposed to plug into the slot beside it? I looked and it dosent look like any other plugs will fit. Thanks for any help.

It should only fit in ONE place on the Motherboard.

Your pics are too blurry

Go to Compaq's website and you may be able to get details for the mother board of your exact model.

that connector looks like its the psu connector for the MB. If there are no other loose wires, nothing else needs to be plugged in

worst case, you'll need a new PSU best case, crack another box and look at the same plug

Lets get back to the basics here....

She IS NOT getting a new one, is she?

That would be dang wrong!

She ruined it (or so she thought) let her live with it until she can BUY HER OWN.

Aww krikey - I looked at the picture - it's just the main power supply cable.

It hooks into a dedicated socket that you can find on the MB with no problems.

- (!)

NOW you can surf through all of her saved files!!!!

Sorry about the blurry pics. The connector in the picture is for the power button, the plastic is nothing more than a guide so to speak, the wires themselves have little connectors on them that plug into the pins on the motherboard, its just to find which color wire goes where.

If there are smaller connectors unplugged, look at the main board to see what is printed on it next to the plug in places.

HD on a two pin is the "HARD DRIVE" LED.

PWR is the POWER LED, and so on.

It's pretty simple.

SPKR (4-pin) is the case speaker.

If they don't light up - shut down, turn the connector 180 degrees and plug it back in.

Make sure the processor cooling fan is plugged in. It's a real tuffy:

It says: "FAN" next to it...

Again, There is only ONE spot on the M/B for that connector to fit.

It will be a black socket about the same length as the connector you have loose.

Is there any doubt in your mind what will happen if she doesn't like her first motor vehicle?

(I'D like to be standing in line for THAT one....)

Dennis is right on this point - that cable only plugs in one direction. It has guide slots.

If there are other cables, the above applies.

The small ones are two-pin or four pin, and reading how the board is labled will do it.

I will be very suprised if it doesn't boot up within ten minutes of you reading this.

the only cables you absolutly need from that bunch is pwr button, dont need a fan, or speaker, or leds, the fan for the CPU *should* plug in somewhere else

BD,

Here is an example of what to look for on that board.

On mine here it is circled in red.

There is text printed on the board to read as well.

the one that is circled in the second picture looks like a USB connection. if she unplugged the front switches and whatnot, like said there should be a lil diagram or lableing near it. the power plug, just pop open another case and follow the wire colors. if there differnt, you might need to buy a new power supply. only like 20 bucks or so.

I know there is only one place on the motherboard that the connector will fit, the problem is that the wires are pulled out of the connector. The plastic connector is nothing more than a guide to guide the fittings onto the pins on the motherboard, the wires complete with little fittings on the end were pulled out of the connector and I dont know in what order they go back in. I will look at the motherboard tommorrow and see if there are any color coded markings or any other markings. Any Greywolf, I am sorry to report that the little snot did indeed get a new computer.
