They say you dont need an additive if you use their gear oil. If you want to keep your stock oil....and not do a complete change..they offer the additive.
if you use amsoil fully synthetic lubes you wont need the friction modifier.
although the friction modifier makes sub-standard lube better lube, gives it what it doesent have.
If you are not planing on changing your diff oil, then you don't need it. There already is LS additive in the diff oil from the factory! The only time you need to use it is when you change the diff oil.
Kevin:
Thanks for the info...According to MY Ford dealer (such as he is)....there is no additive in the fluid from the factory......Cant seem to get a straight answer.
Im trying to help a chatter that I have had since day 1. The service manager told me originally that the chatter was normal with LS diffs. Unfortunately..he no longer works for the dealership...and of course the truck is out of warranty...so I thought an additive might be a cheap try before I have to tear down the diff.
Check you owners manual, it should tell you to add a couple of ounces when changing the diff oil. I do know back some time ago if I recall that a TSB was published because the wrong diff oil was used at the factory! With that said, if Ford is stipulating adding the friction modifier, one can only assume that the factory has put it in there.
There is also a TSB on LS diff. Service tech if I am correct shim and change the clutch packs!
Here a shudder TSB caused by parking brake:
Make: FORD
Model: F-150
Year: 2005
Type: TRUCK
Service Bulletin Number: 18560
NHTSA Item Number: 10017880
Summary Description:
PARK BRAKE DRAG ISSUE THAT PRESENTS ITSELF AS A VEHICLE SHUDDER TO THE CUSTOMER. *TT
if it has l/s it came from the factory with the friction modifier. but by now if you still have chatter your clutch pack is toast and needs a rebuild which should be covered under warranty all 3 of mine were.

With 47K miles I doubt they will cover it. I certainly would have attempted warranty if I htought that was a possibility.
I have full amsoil in my 'Excursion (amsoil does have an * noting the need for the l/s additive) with the exception of the motor oil - still have reserves of Shell to use up.
I also have amsoil in my '01 gt 'stang rear and tranny.
I changed the gear lube because of the chattering i was getting with the stock lube. i put amsoil gear oil in my diff with no friction modifier. drove it around the block and the rear end was chattering. Put 2 oz. of Ford friction modifier in - no chatter. I've got 51,000 miles now and no problems.
