390 or 427?
I got a quote the other day for a 390 installed for around 3000. is that good? now i wonder if i should go for a 427. I have a 74 f-250 and want to start over with it. i dont know what it has now except for the fact that it is beat. i think it is a 390, thats what it looks like but it has had some work don to it, and not in a good way. I go mudding once a year so i want lots of power.

They are both good motors. a 427 will probably run you a bit more becaues they aren't as pleantiful as a 390 is.
I can tell you this. My uncle built himself a hybrid 78-79 and dropped a 427 into it. He's got about 4" of lift and 36's on it. We put about 2 tons if stone(bed was overfilled and had wooden sides to extend bed height) in the bed one summer doing some landscaping and he was pulling away from traffic at stop lights.
