Wards Top 10 best engines

Well, looks like Ford has a winner on their hands. The 4.6 SOHC engine in the Mustang is one of the 10 best engines according to Wards. Of course, we all know that the 4.6 is a great engine design. Now if Ford would put this baby in an F-150, regular cab, 6 speed auto with 3.73 gears, can you say DDDAAAAMMMMMNNNNNNN! Now there's a neat Saturday nite ride.

Read the commentary for the top 10 here:

I'll be honest, the 4.6 would suck in a F-150, the truck wieghs to much. Now put it into a Ranger and you might have something. But make no mistake this would never be a truck motor, power is all at the top end. Great Motor in the Mustang though and if Ford wants to make a SVT version of the Fusion watchout.

Also I think that they really screwed up by not including the LS7. Something just amazing IMO. A 427 small block with Titanium rods and springs and a dry sump oiling system that puts out 505hp from the factory.

This is a personal thing, but I have never really agreed with thier selctions - its one thing not to have the 427 engine, but what about BMW M5's V10???
A 5.0l engine that is capable of reving to 8250rpm and producing 507hp...
Gray-cast iron inserts into an alumininum bedplate style crankcase
6 Main bearings
Spherical valve tappets
Individual cylinder throttle bodies - 120 milliseconds being required to open the throttle butterflies in full
Variable Valve timing on both Intake (66°) and Exhaust (37°)
4V per cylinder
Multi Intake plenums
Two oil reservoirs: one in front of the front axle subframe, another behind the subframe - a total of 4 oil pumps.
Probably the most advanced spark plugs in the world - they are also the knock sensors, meaning that pinging is detected earlier, and easier, and enabling Active knock control.
Runs far and away the most advanced engine management system of any vehicle in the world - it has three 32-bit processors, it needs to be too, there are 50 incoming signals individually for each cylinder per operation cycle,
Meets Euro 4 and US LEV2

I personally have found the "International Engine of the Year" to have greater in depth anaylsis from a technical point of view.

One of the things I learned early, KISS-keep it simple, stupid. With all that mumbo jumbo, just more to go wrong.

that list is comprised of engines which can be obtained by the average person , most people cannot touch the v10 beammer. so the v10 beamer does not belong on the list.

I read on the website that
to be eligible, the engine also must be available in a vehicle with a base price of no more than $52,500.
Which rules out the BMW V10 and the 427 small block...
Which is dissapointing, because even if the majority of us (me included) can't afford either of these vehicles, these are ground breaking engines and technologies here.

Only if you don't understand how it works and how to maintain it

Sorry, I find simple boring...and I have to have something to play with.

With that said, I'm nominating the 6.0 PSD for this

Yea, the joy of retightening the manifold bolts on a 300 every month just can't be topped by any V10 at 8000 rpm......

The 6.0L was on the list in 2003, if I'm not mistaken. The 4.6L is in the F-150's. Isn't the Mustang 4.6L the same as the truck?

Well...with that said, I see no reason why the 3V 4.6L can't be in the F-150 right now.
