Hi guys I'm brand new to the forum, please be patient with me. I have a 91 ranger with 4.0 V6, 4wd, and 122K miles. Yesterday I drove to work and parked without any hint of a problem. Last night when I was leaving work it wouldn't start. Ouside temperature was about 32. The engine turned over fine but would not fire. Out of desperation I did the unthinkable and gave it a shot of starting fluid and it did start. It has no power. I was able to limp home in it. It idles a little rough. It will take the gas if i feed it slowly. If I get ahead of it or put it under load the engine bogs down. I'm leaning towards a fuel problem because the fuel pump runs constantly, I thought it used to spin up when I turned the key and shut off if I didn't start it right away. The check engine light is on , but I haven't had time to check the code yet. Any ideas? The problem is always the last place you look. I'd like to look there first. Thanks in advance - ctranger
Change the fuel filter. Check the fuel pressure to see if it is within specs. Also, the fuel pressure regulator for vacuum and/or leaking diagraphm. Good luck.
I ran the codes and they are 21, 24, and 67. It's running normally again. I don't know if sitting around all day has done something. I'm going to change the fuel filter tomorrow. Thank you all for the help - Dave
21 - ECT out of self-test range
24 - ACT sensor out of self-test range
67 - Neutral/drive switch open or A/C on
67 - Clutch switch circuit failure
67 - MLP sensor out of range or A/C on (E4OD)
Hmm interesting this one is going to be tough.
I changed the fuel filter Sat morning and have driven it Sat and this morning. all seems to be fine. Power is back and no codes. I'm getting some dry-gas to run through the system. This was so weird the ranger has never failed to start or run properly before and it has been much colder just a few days before. The codes don't seem to have anything to do with the problem. I'm not sure what the engine temperature was when it threw the codes. Thanks guys for your help - Dave
