I am in the process of coating my Christmas gift,Sanderson headers, with Por-20 high temp exhaust paint.Would love to have ceramic coated them, but financially impossible.Anyone have experience with this product,or am I going to be disappointed?Steve.
I don't have any experience with that particular product. But my experience with high temp paints in general is that while they dry to the touch so you can install the part, they need to be heated before the coating cures. This is one of the reasons the manufacturer doesn't coat them with high temp paint. It would scratch and rub off in spots during shipping. Be sure ALL the factory paint has been removed. If you paint over any of it, it will peel off the first time the headers heat up. Good luck.
Don't have a header paint report but recently used the paint kit by POR and have been extremely happy with the result. Corporate blue still looks wet and is easy to clean. Best part was alplied with a brush. So far has bee a great product. Hope yours works the same.
ibuzzard- Not too long ago I did a post similar to this. I purchased a set of Sanderson shorties for my 289. They were black from the factory. Most of the people were recommending the barbeque flat black paint which withstands high temps. I'm not familiar with the POR product so I can't comment. I had my headers ceramic coated instead, and I'm thankful I did. Sanderson headers are nice headers and you want to to keep them. Ceramic coat, not only looks nice it's durable and keeps heat down. I paid $150 to have them coated and it was a one day turnaround. I'm not sorry one bit that I spent the money. It's up to you, but any paint you use will eventually need to be repainted. I believe I have a few pics of the ceramic coated headers in my gallery. Hope this helps, I know what your going through. Here you go, check it out.
Have The Sanderson Ceramic Coated Headers For My 351c, Just Waiting For A Final Tune And Am Ready To Install. Looking Forward To How They Sound, Already Have A 2 1/2" Dual W/crossover And Flowmasters. I Think They Will Be Worth Saving For.
I just used the POR 20 high temp aluminum paint on my '56 5.0L headers. My brother used this paint on his drag car headers a few years ago with good results. I couldnt justify spending the money to get them ceramic coated because they weren't perfect to start with. the headers need to be super clean, i sandblasted mine. It can be brushed or sprayed , i brushed on with foam brush, it dries to touch, but is "soft" and needs to be cured. Quartz heater, infared heat light, or BBQ grill could be used to cure, if you cant bolt them and cure them on the truck. i used the grill
there is a not so good picture in my gallery, i dont know how to link it here, or i can take a better picture if you want.
