im building a pretty decent 460EFI to put in my 78 f250 4x4... i already have a tired 460 in it, and even with the 44inch tires it pulls pretty hard, but she is tired, and i want to put a rebuilt 460 with fuel injection in her. my question is what year is best to pretty much be a start for the block, heads and intake. i dont want a roller cam either... my plan is to build a decent powerplant that will be "turn key" for periods of time.. im talkin 460, balanced... ill port the heads on the exhaust side, long tube headers, 9.25:1 compession pistons, a mild 4x4/RV cam... larger throttle body... so not really a 600hp monster, but a reliable build that will have some good power. and from what i understand the stock ford computer pretty much wont like these mods, so i figure ill go with a standalone computer... 034efi my friend has one and it works pretty cool. you can change everything... and its pretty user friendly.. if anyone thinks the stock computer can handle my changes. ill consider going that way for ease... also kinda hoping to run chevron 87 octane gas, possibly 89.... 38gallon gas tanks take a long time to fill....but keep the credit card companies happy... hehe
Your in luck on the roller cam Ford never put one in a 460. The best year to get if your going fuel injection is a 96-97 Mass. or Calif. modle. They were the only 460s that came MASS AIR and were sequential injection. They came with a 80mm MASS and diffrent intake tubing and a sequential ECM and diffrent injector wireing every thing is the same as the standard speed density systems.

woo ok... so the internet is great.. but gives you lots of mixed answers.... ive been reading different answers. but from what i understand is that during the EFI years, ford restricted the intake real bad... now i know that you want an intake that will be somewhat smaller because its a truck and you want the bottom end power... but is it to restrictive? would it be even smart to try and port the intake a little? i also read that they were putting restrictive "bumps" in the intake, like they did in the exaust? anyone?
When I say intake tubing I mean the plastic tubing from the air cleaner.
I have read that its a good idea to port match the intake and head to the intake gasket size. Ive read that the intake and head are restrictive where they meet.

well if you can find the ever so rare origenal mass air you can use that.. but good luck... ive been reading that you can take the ford 5.0 (302) mass air conversion kit that you can buy from ford, and they tweak it a little and it works on the 460... you would have to read up on that for the technical details.. im looking in a ford racing catalog, they 302 mass air conversion kit will run you about $695.... i think ill read up on this idea some more... if mass air can read and understand all the tweaks and mods im gunna make, maybe ill just go that route...
