I have got 2 motors I can use. A 46 model and a 50 model 226 Flathead's. I have a 48 F1 with a Flathead V8 and 3sp trans in it. I'm not going to use the flathead V8. What I plan on doing is putting one of the 226 flathead 6's in it for know. My question is will the 3sp trans bolt up to either of the 226's with no problem. I was going to use the clutch and all b/c it is all good. Any info will be a big help. Thanks
Transmissions between the flathead and OHV 6 and flathead V8 and Y block are the same in those general years. Bell housings are different. I dont know about the swappability of clutch parts but can look it up if needed.
286merc, If you wouldn't care to it would really help me out. I would like to be able to us my 3sp b/c it is in good useable shape. I'm hoping the clutch will work b/c it is good to. As far as a bellhousing to make it bolt up to the 226, I'll have to find one of those. I quess I need to start checking out the classifieds on this site. Or I'll post my needs in the parts wanted section and hope for the best. If you could check that out for me I could use the help. Thanks Scott
The small bellhousing on the trans I believe is the same as the 8. The front unit or hogsring could be what's different, or it might just be the plate on the back of the engine that's different. And all the rest might be the same, tha't kind of a gray area as I haven't ever read anything that nails that question down. I would try the large bellhousing unit and see if it bolt to the 226. The clutch components are the same but I'm not sure if the flywheel bolt spacing is the same, although I wouldn't be suprised if they are. I would try to mix and match be and see what will fit and what won't before you buy parts you already have.
I'm going to go dad's friday and take a long look at his motor/trans and see what I can find out by comparing his to mine. Maybe I'll get a better idea of what I need. Thanks
