87 f-150 300-6. Air pump is dying, was going to by-pass it with a shorter belt, but the lower alternator mounting bolt is in the way,., There is a metal collar thing sticking out then the bolt threads though it and bottoms out on this. Looks like i could grind the collar down but the bolt back in and it will clear.. anybody know what i am refering to? and if it will hurt anuthing to do it? I found the perfect belt but it rubs on this bolt.. so any ideas??
The collar goes in and out to adjust for varying thickness of different alternators.
When you change an alternator you are supposed to move the collar out to make room for the new alternator.
You can grind it down as long as the bolt head still contacts it to put pressure on the bolt. But if change alternators in the future the new alternator may be thinner and when you tighten the bolt you may break the bracket.
Air pump( remanufactured) is 60 bucks, helps keep the truck running better also. The air pump is required to keep your catalytic convertor running correctly, if you still have a cat and intend to leave it installed, then you better make sure the air pump,(smog pump or thermactor) system is working correctly.
