New Toy(or parts for my old Toy)

I just picked up a 1978 F350 Dually, 2wd. It has axle code 27, and is a Dana 70 (or at least it says 70 cast into the housing). Anyone have a clue as to gearing on this? And is this a good rear end? I have yet to figure out weather to part it or put another motor into it, The cab & front end are ok, But it is a cab & chassis flatbed, and I am not really into flatbeds.

That's a good rear end, and yes, the 70 reflects DANA 70 which was standard in the 2wd f350, 4x4's got a Dana 60 rear. Your decision of course what to do with it. Have fun. -Dale

rear gear

I thought of something else, go to the vin decoder and punch all the info in. it will give you all the build info including the rear ratio as built.

Actually 79 F-350s 4x4s only came with a D70 rear and D60 front.(at least all I've seen and heard of).

Not trying to mess up the thread, but I have also seen alot of fake F-350 4x4s. Some will say they have one, b/c some one put the badges on a F250 and think they have the D70 when it is only a F250 with a D60, so bubba blue, I know what your saying, and as far as the thread goes, it looks like Mil1ion answered you question.

Actually it is 2WD, and I know it is a D70 Since it is huge next to the 61 I have in my diesel, It counts out as 4.10 to 1. I am thinking about swapping it into my 1984 F250 and building myself a 1 ton dually .

Thanks for the info Mil1ion. Code 27 checks out as a D70 w/4.10 which is what I found when i pulled down the rear cover.

Finding a D60 front might be alittle hard(at least in a junkyard), you would need to find a 79 F-350 4x4, or a F-250 w/snowfighter package.(hard to find in my area, buy you might have more around than me) There is always the option of buying new!

Smile but...

Yes, he did answer the questions originally posted. It seams I erred originally, by posting the fact that the 350 4x4's (79) were a dana 60 rear end. The statement is correct, It just wasn't his question. The decoding graphs are great, seen em. Show me the 79 4x4 with a dana 70 in there. Also, according to spicer, the 4x4s got the dana 60 f&r. Ford did good letting the vin so easily show what the truck is 250/350/4x2/4x4. Swapped out hardware is easy to spot. Not that there may not be some odd ball production stuff. They did that once in a while too. Great thread.
