When I bough my truck I had a spray in liner applied by Ford. In general, I am extremely unhappy with it. It chips and things slide on it. Ford resprayed it but it is generally a poor liner.
I was out at Agri Supply in Garner NC a few months back and discovered they had a rubber floor mat designed for the 04 150. AND ... it as only $39.95. I bought it. WOW!!! This thing is great.
First, it fits perfect. It is not a generic rubber mat that you have to cut yourself. Second, it is at least a quarter inch thick tubber so it is extremely durrable. Third, nothing slides on it. Most of my tools, supplies and items I simply toss in the back and it doesn't move. As a matter of fact, the other night we went out to a x-mas dinner at a freinds house. I simply set the pies, hams, cookies and other items on the mat and drove the 30 miles to the party. When we got there ... everything was in place. (the bed is covered).
I have Rhino lining in all of my trucks. It's been great, especially because in my business we always have chemicals and water in the truck. If I tried to just use a mat, the floor would rot under it. The dealer tried to spray a Line-X bedliner, but it peeled and cracked. They switched over to Rhino and it's been great.
I recently bought a DualComp ( http://www.dualcomp.com/ ) bedliner, for my 2006 F-150.
In addition to the benefits of a non-slip rubber bed mat, it protects the front, back and sides of the bed.
I paid $250, including shipping, and I understand there may be better prices online.
I've had a bed mat in my last 2 trucks and I think they are great. The one I sold last year was 10 years and 179,000 miles old and the bed was not scratched or rusty underneath at all. As stated, stuff doesn't slide around but my wheel wells got dented and scratched. They would have also gotten dented with a spray in liner. I think the drop in liner is only good to cover the dents and scratches when you are ready to sell the vehicle. I wheeled and dealed to get the bedliner in my F150. I got the dealer down to the lowest penny I could and then told them I would buy only if they threw in the mat. They indicated their actual cost was in the $50 neighborhood and they didn't want that to break the sale.

That's the concept behind the DualComp. No sliding and dent/scratch protection.
I'll have to see how it works long term.
In my last few trucks, I had spray-ins ( LineX and Rhino ) and I still used a bed mat. That stopped sliding; but, still left the back, front and sides, of the box, subject to dents. It also cost a few hundred dollars more than the DualComp.
