Tire Pressure Monitor

Does anyone know how to disable the tire pressure monitoring system? I have put on winter tires/wheels without the sensors and the WARNING -Very Low Tire" chime and message is driving me crazy. HELP PLEASE!

You didn't say the year, 2004 and later you can't do it.

Sorry, it is a later model 2003, post revision to the earlier model flaws (so I was told).

It's killin me too!!! I have different wheels/tires on my '05 EB and I get all kinds of different warnings! "TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR FAULT" , "LOW TIRE PRESSURE" and then there's the yellow tire dummy light that won't go off. I get one of the three only sometimes... I think I'm really freakin out the poor Expy, she just doesn't know whats goin on!

ExpyBob is correct. 2004 and later it is illegal to do. Ford only complying with FMVSS #138, which has no provision for disabling the TPMS system. Hop on over to www.nhtsa.gov and you can read all about it.

What's dumb about this is that the rule states the system does not have to work with replacement tires, but a message stating that it does not work has to be displayed.

I've had that damn malfunction light / warning on for the past 6 months since I got new tires. At first it thought the tires were underinflated and beeped constantly at me for weeks, then I guess it just decided that it was broken and gave the system malfunction message. The tire place couldn't reset the system, so I'll have to take it to the Ford dealer and pay them just for that. What a pain. A pain that soon everyone will be able to share with us. What a crazy goverment we have.

I think FMVSS 138 is lame excuse for a shop to give for not disabling the monitor on an '03 model. It's a voluntary phase-in ruling for 2006 and 2007 models. Full compliance is required for the 2008 models.

As an FYI, my 2004 Expedition NBX did not come with a tire pressure monitoring system.

I've even made additional phone calls to various suppliers trying to get new air pressure sensors for my new rims so the system still works. No one can even answer that one! These things are just goofy...

You may have trouble with that also. I purchased one set for my '05 EB snow tires, had them installed, then I was told that the computer had to be programmed and it can only recognize four sensors at a time. Still looking for a cheaper solution and help!

Angry

Where have you guys been? I changed my tires in 01/06 and now I always have to reset my computer. I put a message on this forum in Jan. but had no takers. I'm glad I checked in.

Anyway, my manual says that you can remove the sensors on your original tires by unscrewing the valve stems. You need to change the rubber o-rings when you reinstall them.

Now here are the questions:

1. In order to remove the sensor and valve stem, do you have to take the tire off the rim?

2. Will the sensors work on non-OEM rims?

I just had my Rims and tires changed out this weekend on my 05 Limited. They removed the sensors without taking the tires off the rims. They did let all the air out of the tires and then pushed the tire down to seperate it from the rim and took out the sensor. They installed them on the new 20" rims I bought and they work just fine.

I'm thinkin' it must be a wheel by wheel situation... I had my shop try to mount the sensors on my 20in rims and they couldn't. The area where the back of the wheel stem goes thru the rim was too small. Odd considering these are Roush rims which are used on the new F150's. I guess they don't have the air pressure system on the new 150's yet... oh well, I've kinda gotten used to reseting the system every time I get in.

It's not that big of deal anymore to me....

That's possible. I bought the Zinik Z20 Violi and the valve stems fit perfect. It is strange that valve stem opening was too small.

Dragonkeeper,

Your post is music to my ears!
Did you have to change out the rubber O-rings like the manual states?

Are the sensors actually part of the valve stem?

I'm willing to try to anything.

Thanks!
