I am looking into buying a 74 F20 4x4. Apparently it was a utility truck without power steering. The current owner has a 74 Dana 44 gearbox column gearbox, etc. He says that you cannot swap them out though, but that the power steering setup will have to be welded and fabbed to fit onto the frame. Does anyone know what he is talking about?
Thanks
Aaron
I have a 73 F250 so I'll assume their simular. I got a stearing gearbox out of a 77-79 for mine. I had to have a notch cut out of the front of the front cross member and a "L" shaped piece welded back in so the box would fit. My truk has the Dana 44 closed knuckle dif. with drum brakes. You can also get the original RAM type parts to put on it. But there are a lot of pieces and it tends to leak.
Aaron,
Let's look at this from the feasible point of view.
1. Did the 74 F250 4x4 come with power steering? My guess is "Yes."
2. What does the front end have to do with the conversion? I don't know.
3. If one was to purchse a steering column,P/S steering gear w/pitman arm from a 74 F250 4x4, Why couldn't one install them in your truck?
I know that you can't just swap out boxes because the column is a different length. The P/S column is shorter.
That's the most I can offer at this point, sorry.

OK the extra axle is a Dana 44 out of a 78 with disks with the gearbox and column out of the same truck. FASTCAT was it sounds like it was a pretty easy process, take it to a 4x4 shop and get the fab work done, am I right, especialy if the current axle has disks. I have plenty of time to mess with it. I figure get new seals for the gearbox and freshen it up. The truck is a manual so the column swap should be pretty easy. The truck has a great body off of a 78. I am going to go look at it in the daylight this weekend and see what kind of shape the suspension is in.
Thanks
Aaron
