52 heater motor

Afternoon all,

When i bought my 52 f6 earlier this year, it was already converted to a 12v system. The only two electrical things that didnt work was the horn, there wasnt one, and the heater, which had an aftermarket rotary switch which didnt work, but the owner assured me with a new switch no problems.

Anyway, i went and bought another switch from Napa for 19.00 and hooked it up, gave it a turn, and it lit up and then smoked like a christmas tree on fire. The heater motor did spin for a few seconds till i was able to turn the flaming switch off. At least it was warm for a second!

My guess is that the heater motor wasnt ever converted/switched to 12v and in tracing the wires i dont see a voltage reducer anywhere.

I could resist, so i went ahead and just held the wires together and the fan doesnt spin at all.

SO my question is, is the fan burnt out now, and is there a way to test it with a meter?
IF so am i better of getting a new 6v and using a reducer or can i just get a 12v?
AND how does the motor box come apart to replace the fan? I had a bunch of screws out of the right side but nothing would move. Does the cover snap off, or do i need to remove more screws? OR does it have to be removed from the truck first?

I have a 56 f500 that is 12v and is currently scheduled for disassebly so i could borrow that motor if it will work.

Lastly, where was the original heater switch located in the 52? I dont seem to have any holes in my dash and this univeral is a under the dash clamp on.

thanks for any answers you can offer

MC

It's hard to say how it comes apart as it could be a Ford fresh air or recirculating heater, or one of many aftermarket ones that were out there. Take it out of the truck and do it on a bench. Chances are the motor is rusted up and stuck. You could use a motor from your 56 if it matches up. You could get one from a Ford Escort as it's the same one as the trucks, all the way back to 1957. Just use one from a non-A/C car. Get the core checked out while it's apart. Don't want a leak after all the work you're doing to it and have to rip it out again. The switch was on a bracket that was screwed to the bottom of the dash. It was black with white lettering.

thanks barry,

I am guessing it is a Ford recirculating, as it is stamped Ford and doesnt have a fresh air intake, it just draws air from the bottom.

I checked at napa and randomly entered years of the ford escorts for 82, 87, and 90 for the non AC motors and they are the same napa part number, for about 36.00 dollars. Is this want i want to get?

I wouldnt mind taking the whole thing out but it is only been 20 degrees here during the day, so i was hoping just to pop in the new fan and be done with it!

Any one else shed some light on opening up a 52 ford heater box while its installed?

If not I'll give in, and pull the whole unit

thanks

That's the one you want from NAPA. As for the case, you'll end up pulling the heater out of the truck. I'd do that, so you can compare the new to the old.

Howdy,

I bought a new permanent magnet motor for my 55 from a local autoparts place that had a Siemans catalog.

The good thing about that catalog was the motors listed included complete dimensions, shaft size/length etc so I could compare.

Also, it appeared that someone had already replaced my old motor with a 12v one but it turned the wrong way! It was a brush type 2 speed motor from some newer car or truck but turning the wrong way it didn't blow much air thru the heater! (it didn't matter which way I hooked up the wires it still turned the same direction!!)

The new motor being perm-mag runs in either direction. It was only about $45 and they had it the next day. Most autoparts stores should have access to a Siemans catalog or similar for heater motors etc.

Good luck!

Rick
