Hi Corner Gas. I have a chance to buy an 82 Silver Wing with 58,000 kms for $2,000 or maybe less. From the pictures it does look mint, fully dressed and has just saftied for Manitoba. It belongs to a friend`s mother who bought it this past summer for $1500 and she spent $500 on it. She is selling it because it is too heavy for her to handle. The down side is it is in Manitoba so I can`t see it without going there and it is not as great a deal as your`s. Hard to buy a decent m/c for any less money so it sounds ok. What do you think?
It is always hard to say unless you see it in person, but judging by your discription it sounds like a good deal to me. The Silverwing was probably the best midsize motorcycle of its time. Liquid cooled, shaft drive and air suspension make it a great riding bike, the only low point is its weight. With the vertically opposed cylinders it looks more like a beemer but with all the storage it is great for commuting or taking short trips. From what I hear they are also easy to work on. The only bad thing I've heard about them is the plastic cooling fan tends to break at the hub. I don't think you would find a good touring bike for much less than $2000.00 unless you get lucky.
When I was looking for one the best I ever found was an 81 Goldwing for $3800.00 which didn't need any work. There are ones out there cheaper but they all need work and if it is carbs and you take it to a dealer you can count on being $800 - $1000 poorer, that is what I found out when I started looking around last spring. This spring I am doing carb jobs on two Goldwings for people in town, when they found out what I was doing with my bike last summer I got real popular. Any way I hope I didn't put you to sleep reading this sounds like that bike would be a good deal.
Thanks for the reply, I think that I am on the right track and it is good to find out what you think. One of the problems I may have is getting enough use of this m/c as I have a full plate in the summer but sounds like when I do want to sell I should be able to recoup most of my coin. Now I can hardly wait for summer as there are even more reasons
Sometimes I wonder about that too, but then on a nice summer evening when I am riding down the highway and there is a clear blue sky, the setting sun and the scents from the blooming crops make seem all worth while.
Just a question cornergas, what kind of mileage did your bike get? I am considering purchasing a bike this next summer too, just because I have heard they get insane fuel mileage!
With my 1993 900 Kawasaki I used to get high 40`s mpg depending on wind and speed. Some small cars get better milage, boring compared to two wheels, except in the rain or cold. Mopeds/powered skate boards might get 80/100 mpg.
Thats pretty good, I was thinking of getting a late nineties bike through the sgi website, fixing er up abit then trying to drive er through the summer. Might be a little better on fuel then the 97, plus I think it would be fun to fix it up abit, maybe paint it make it different then the others
Perppypyro I get about 40 mpg with the Goldwing and thats just short trips and bumming around. Like Fomoko1 says some small cars get better mileage but how much fun are they. My sister in law has a Honda VLX which is a little 600 vtwin but she gets closer to 50 mpg and even the Suzuki and Kawaski 800 v twins get that kinda mileage. But then it all depends on how hard you are twisting that right hand.
I get about 35-40mpg with my GS650. If the bike had another gear, it'd get better, but as it is, it runs around 5500@ 60mph. My Metro gets 50ish. Guess which I'd rather be driving. Actually it's a toss up between the bike and my F350
I put a bid on an '83 Gs 850 yesterday and will find out Thursday if I got it. Haven't decided wether I'll fix or part out yet.
Can't wait to get back on the road. I still have to do my road test. Manitoba's got graduated licensing and even though I've had a class 1 for 14 years, I have to do the graduated thing for my class 6. Really sucks.

.....Better not let our govenment leaders hear that or they`ll have to some how top that. What is the Man. test for m/c? In Sask. there used to be a short written test and if you didn`t fall off the bike you had it made! Luckly I still have my m/c licence from before. If we can`t get afew Ford trucks together this summer for a show/cruise/shine we could at least get together for a m/c cruise!
