transfer case hung between 4l & 4h

I have an 88 XLT 5.0, AOD, auto locking hubs, electric 4x4 shift. Engaged in 4l this weekend coming up muddy hill, got to top no problem. Now no reverse. Took shift motor off, thought it was hung between 4h & 2h but it was hung between 4l & 4h. Just about couldn't get motor off because of tension. After getting motor off, tried to rotate shaft to 2h but couldn't. Alot of resistance. Now my bronco is on top of the hill, luckily at my house, with no reverse and hung between 4l & 4h. Transfer case problem---yes?? Transmission problem---i don't know???? Anybody with some advice. I'm thinking I need to jack up the front end and try to rotate the front drive shaft to unlock hubs. Maybe that will help. Anybody know something else???????

well, i lifted the front end and turned each tire backward to unlock the hubs but that still didn't allow me to rotate the shaft to 4h. now when i put the transmission in any gear it does nothing, like being in neutral. this weekend or next week it will get loaded on a trailer and taken to the local shop. any suggestions before trailering it?

Lift all 4 tires up in the air at the same time to completely unload the T-case and relieve any possible drivetrain stress, and try to shift then. I don't know if you can use a wrench or something to shift -- but it worth the try.

Sounds like the T-case is jammed in a neutral position which will negate any gear selection from the transmission since the t-case is AFTER the tranny in the driveline. I would do as aurgathor said or disconnect driveshafts to see if releasing any driveline torque will allow the t-case to be manually shifted with tools.

well. i lifted all 4 tires off the ground. still could not get it to shift into 2h. got it into 4l once but never completely into 4h or 2h. shift motor works fine but lugs down when trying to shift into 2h. could not manually shift into 4h or 2h either with shift motor off of t-case. i still have forward sometimes but no reverse. off to the shop i guess. thanks for the help aurgathor & greystreak92.
