2003 Super Duty - V10 - Ping/Spark Knock
#16
well you may have missed in one of my posts, that this truck (purchased used from a pp), pinged the day I drove it home. This was before I did any mods. to it. It was bone stock, w/stock air filter, no programmer, no nothing. 87 octane in the tank. So whatever it is causing it, has been there since day one. 91 octane makes no difference. I am definitely going to return to the stock program and go from there.

Same deal with my 02 EX....I have been noticing a lot of pinging particularly at about 50mph and 1500 or so rpms when you get on the gas...under load and lugging. Took it to the dealer when I was having the front hubs replaces under Warranty and asked them to check it out...$85 later "yea we hear it, but we hooked up all of our diagnostic tools and didn't see any problems..$85 please..try different gas" I own a gas station so I know it's not the gas and none of my other cars/customers have any problems. I do know that running premium in cars that do not require it does cause problems once you try to switch back to regular due to the slower burning premium leaving carbon deposits in the combustion chamber surfaces because of the lower compression and minutely incomplete buring of the fuel mixture.
I just topped it off with 33 gallons of 93 octane on top of the 11 gallons of 87 octane. So this tanks octane is right about 91.5.
I'll try that first, then a tank of 93. If no luck:
I'll fill her back up with 87 and reset the computer. If no luck:
I'll run a course of Techron concentrate through the 87 octane tank. If no luck:
I'll change the fuel filter and stick with the 87 octane. If no luck:
I'll have a top end cleaning done on her and see how she is once again with the 87 octane. If no luck:
I'll hook up a nitrous system to her and drive the ***** out of it hopefully blowing it up before the warranty period is up, disconnect it and I'll go to the dealer and say "I told you so".
I'll keep this thread updated.

I've checked all that out on my truck already. Heat shields on the exhaust are all tight, nothing rattles. The converter access plate has a pc. of rubber wedged in there to keep it from any potential rattling. My noises still have not gone away. My noises arise at 3000 rpms and above under load, specifically if I down shift into 2nd. going uphill. 3500-4000 rpms, big time ping!
