I bought a 1992 f150 this fall when I tried out the 4wd it seemed to work alright exept the shifter need to be worked loose do to lack of use and the front end was a bit noisy at first. Then I didn't try it again untill the snow came and now the front wheels are not engaging.I crawled under the truck today, while the vehicle was off and in park with manual hubs unlocked ,I spun the front driveshaft and nothing else moved.Would this mean my pinion or gear is broke or worn out?Could anyone help me troubleshoot wether the problem is in the axle, trasfer case or shifter. thanks for any help James
Where did you have the transfer case shifter? 2h or 4h? If it was in 2h, the front drive shaft is going to turn. Lock your hubs and try it again. The driveshaft should not turn now since the hubs should be connected in.
If the hubs are locked in and it still spins, you have troubles. It could be a number of things, hubs, broken axle, ring and pinion thrashed. To see if the hubs are the problem, leave the hubs locked in and spin the drive shaft and see it the knuckles are turning. It sounds like you have a pretty big problem.
The hubs lock onto the axles fine so i geuss my diferential is shot. I'm going to make a new post and see if any one can help me identifie my gear ratio the rear end tag# is s8368 3 08 88 ze1s thanks for your responce James
It appears you have 3.08 ratio and an 8.8" rear axle. You probably have a dana 44 reverse cut differntial up front. If your spinning the driveshaft up front, and NEITHER of the axles (left or the right) are spinning, then yeah, you got diff problems. It would be considered normal if you spun the driveshaft and only 1 axle spun (that is if you have the hubs unlocked).
