I looked at a used Excursion today that had a 7.3L ps in it. My problem is that the Y pipe ? or the pipe that goes from the turbo to the intake was extreamly covered in grease and grit. I dont know if this is normal or not. The motor has 63k on it and its a '00 modle. The owner dosent seem to be one that was real concerned w/ cleanliness. Could this be normal for this motor given the conditions of the milage and the owner never ever cleaned it. Any input would be great its getting down to decision time to buy one. Also does the 7.3L in a excursion have a air cooler on it. Don't know how I forgot to look for that today. I read somewere that the E-series and the X's did not run the air cooler.
i would crawl up on the engine with a handheld mirror and look for leaks around the spot. may be an oil leak, shooting oil on the pipe. i would suspect the turbo pedestal- where the turbo mounts down onto the pedestal, and also where that mounts to the block.
yes, the excursion does have an "intercooler". look for two big pipes, one that comes off the turbo to the left wheel area, and in front of the radiator. the "cold-side" will come up the other side and go back into this contraption and backinto the engine.

Do u mean an intercooler? If so it should have one. the excessive grease /oil or grime might be a leak. Needs to be cleaned with Simple Green then checked closely for leaks. just my 2 cents worth.
My 99 had that....Do the CCV mod and tighten the clamps. All of them.. and enjoy!!!
Jetdoc that '99 you got did you hear any wine from the power stearing. The one I looked at today made a little noise, the owner said it always did that. Dont want to aford new hate buying used.
rerouting the crank case vent. it was sucked into the intake pre-turbo, and left an oily residue on everything. look at my gallery, i have several pics of my CCV reroute, i even tied mine into my exhaust flow so there wouldnt be a stupid looking cloud of mist coming out from under the truck.
Intercooler yea thats what I ment. Thanks. CCV mod? Whats involved in that?
Simple mod done by changing you crankcase ventilation from internal to external. Do a search on "CCV mod"(select "search" under "Forums" on main page). I believe you'll find some pictures of peoples CCV mod done well.
Crankcase ventilation its all coming togeather now, a good little learning seccion. But thats kinda what the site is for right. I'll do the ccv search thanks.

strokin_it7.3 that pic helped out understanding. Dosent seem like it would be to bad at all to do. Did the search found some good explanitions but no good pics. Thanks.
Read a post somewhere that mentioned to run the vent hose vertical then horizontal over brake mastercylinder then down...the idea was to allow the oil to drain back into the CC. Trying to avoid little oill puddles in driveway.
the oil wont drip. i will go under my truck tomorrow and get some pics for you, i have it tied in my exhaust and i will take pics of the routing for now, here is what i have of it so far-

mech2161 has this. he reversed the "doghouse" and then ran it up over. but see, the only that will drain back down is the short ~10'' of hose that is close to the engine, once it goes down again, all the mist that accumulates on the hose will (not much) collect and not go back into the engine.
