15w40 In Cold Weather?

I've been using dello 400 15/40 in my 2001 psd truck and the temp droped to -13 and my truck won't start very good. It took about 5 times turning it over before it would stay running. Then when it finaly stayed runing it was running realy ruff!, and white and blue smoke, when it finally warmed up it was fine and the smoke was gone. Ford says to switch my oil to 10w30 and the problem will go away? is this true

I never expected it to get this cold, this early in the winter! I had the same problem and didn't have her plugged in. It was tough and she was very cranky at -15 but like you, I did finally get her going. I have been looking around for some Rotella T 10w30 or Mobil1 Truck and SUV. Been to every auto parts store, Wally World and you name it. No one has any in stock! Wallys' said they usually have the Mobil1 in stock but their oil deliveries have been very flakey since Katrina. They don't know when they will get another shipment in. I guess its plug-in time until I can find some lighter weight oil in this part of the country!

You might also check your glow plugs and glow plug relay - the white/blue smoke and rough running until warmed sounds like glow plug issues. Check the sticky at the top of the forum for all the details.

It seems like the winter oil of choice around here is 5w-40.

This guy can get u some really great 5W-40 syn for aroung $14/gal. Schaeffers
9000 series. They sell in bulk and can ship to your house. Read the oil/lube forum and you'll hear a lot of good about Schaeffer products. Very little known about...they cater mostly to the industrial world. Just my .02 worth.

I've been having a lot of trouble getting Mobil1 into my shop for a while. Just this week it came in after a long wait. At the time of this writing I think the supply is coming back online and recommend those that are searching for Mobil1 to try again.

a minnesota kid myself. i have always used Shell Rotella 15w-40. i always use Cenex Roadmaster fuel. But you always have to plug the trucks in below 0. then in my opinion this combination will work. my expirence with Schaeffers in other diesel equipment was a higher oil consumption. bryan

suggest also using a diesel fuel additive when its gets that cold, (anit-gel) and according to the bottle it helps starting. I'm using 5w-40 dino oil, avail at valvoline instant oil change, you can also use 10w-30, there is a chart in your manual (diesel fuel supllement book). Does anyone think that the fuel additives help with starting in nipply weather ??

i switched to the rotella 5w-40 synthetic from walmartthis week, and the truck deffinatly cranks faster than 15w-40 dino rotella in the cold. first time for synthetic for me, always used 15w-40 in all the trucks at my old shop. support vehicles and all the pete's never had a hard start problem.
