anyone know if you can put a plow on a 94 xlt 4x4 scab ranger. and if so who makes one for it. I have a 450 ft driveway and that is all I would use it for. I just took the ranger off the road since I bought a f150. I was going to part the ranger out but if I can save on a plowing bill I'll keep it for that.
I live in Northern Maine and often see smaller pick ups and Jeep CJ's on the road with 6 1/2 foot Fisher plows on them. Most of the smaller plows are electric over hydraulic models. I assume this due to space under the hood being at a premium. I have also seen plows that are not metal. They are framed in metal and the blade is actually some kind of transparent composite material. I assume this is for weight issues. I have never looked close at one so I do not know who manufactures them. I plow with an antique Farmall tractor.
My uncle plowed his driveway (about the same length as yours) with an Explorer for a while. He had a steel plow. Anyway, he ended up putting some serious wear on the front end of the thing, and since he commuted quite a ways in it at the time, had to spend quite a bit of money getting it back in highway shape. If you'll just be plowing with it, though, I wouldn't think a worn-out front end would be a problem.
The only other thing to consider is that if you are just using it for plowing, and ignore it when there's no snow, it may not start when you need it. Another uncle had this problem with the old Ford tractor he used to use to clear his driveway. Just something to think about.
Since I bought the F150 thats my ride back and forth to work. Believe it or not I'm getting better fuel mileage with the F150 too. Right now I have been using the Ranger for a yard truck hauling fire wood from the woods to the house. I'm sure I'll find projects around the house for it year round, just to keep it running. I dont think I'll ever put it back on the road so wear and tear isn't a issue.
