7.3 Oil Change Intervals
Ok, I know its not that much money. The quickie oil change place says to change the oil on my 1999 7.3 F250 with 36,000 miles every 3,000 miles. I bought this truck used with real low miles and is my first dielsel. How often should I change the engine oil? I dont use any fancy syn just the standard oil and filter.
Thanks

Personally I would change it about every 5,000-7,000 miles.
That might seem high to some but our work trucks (dt466 and cat 350) get changed every 15,000 miles and they all have over 300,000 miles on them and have had zero problems as far as the engines go.
Make sure to get the right oil for the your PSD it is finiky and won't run correctly with the wrong stuff. Check your owners manual.

I do 5k, some people do 7k and even others who use synthetic oil will go 10k. Then of course there are people who do 3k. I run rotella and the oil isn't even black when I change it, but my truck does not tow anything and I am comfortable with 5k. I do oil and fuel filters every 10k. You need to take into consideration how hard you work your truck and take it from there.

I do mine on a timeline basis, fall and spring, fall change gets lighter oil for the winter and spring is back to 15w40. On the farm we only changed oil in the tractors once a year, and their use is definately qualified as severe. Granted the oil is measured in gallons and not quarts. But I average about 12-15K miles a year and doing it twice with the weather seems to help her start much easier in the cold months.

I change my oil and filter every 5000 to 6000 miles. In the summer when I am hauling around the travel trailer I will have one interval where I'll do the service at 3000 miles. Over the course of the year, I'll then average 5000 miles - within the specs of the owner's manual, but reflecting the "severe duty" of the trailer for that one change.

I"ve been doing 3000 miles because my daily commute is just 7 miles one way. There's usually one 60 mile round trip during the week and, in the summer, a 60 mile round trip to the drag strip with the race car in tow. With the short runs, the oil gets pretty black after 3000. Got 110,000 on my 2000 PSD.

I bought my 2002 last year at the end of May with 79K miles!!!
I noticed before leaving the Stealership a sign for a Diesel S/D oil and filter change for $99.00
I like doing my own oil changes every 3K miles and spend about $50. [Shell Rotella T 15W-40 and a Ford Motorcraft (1995) oil filter]
I have since switched to Rotella T synthetic which I paid $15.00 per gallon(3) and a filter, cost me $30 more.
I will change it every 5k and will probably add a dual-bypass filter and change it every 10K sometime this Spring/Summer
