I believe that they were Dodge Royal Monaco or Plymouth Grand Fury.

For years Chrysler had the police car market tied up with these two models. They were part of the "fuselage" styled full sized cars that Chrysler had from 69 to 78. In 79 came the down sized St Regis (Dodge) and Plymouth Grand Fury.

400 and 440 V-8's were used up until the end in 78. In 79 the 360 was the biggest.

Very few survive. They are subject to incredible amounts of abuse and neglect, not to mention driving situations that can do them in.

Remember that this is (was) TV. So much prep work went into the cars before filming.

For wheels to fall off, axles are usually sawed to a hair's width of metal, then the slightest rap and the wheel pops.

For other things, bolts can be removed, special catches rigged, saw cuts made, etc. The special effects department can do some amazing things.
Sometimes lug nuts are removed and the wheel "glued" onto the rotor, just barely enough to get it rolling, then "wham" a wheel flies off.

And the opposite applies for the family sedan that plays "demo derby" down a city street, with virtually no damage. All kinds of reinforcement added underneath.

the cop cars were chryslers but i think they had some chevy impallas once in a while

I recall at least 2 episodes that contained mustangs. In one, Jesse was driving a primer black 67 Coupe against Boss Hogg in a moonshine race. The other one, they were having some big Hazzard county derby, and a lady friend of the dukes was driving a pretty nice 68 fastback.

In that one he was driving a primer black 4 door LTD, and yeah it was running on shine at the end. I can't remember the name exactly either.

i live in a small town in n cal and i have never seen so many old ford trucks and cars.

one day i saw the general lee parked in front of this store.i looked at it closely and it was exactly like the g/l on dukes of hazzard.the roof had the flag, the liscence plate said "duke",the color was the same as was the interior.i wanted to wait for the driver to return but had to get goin.ive never seen it since.

Fordboy,

I think that was a '68 Fastback, but I don't remember for sure. My g/f got me the DVDs for my birthday, so I'll have to go back and look. I do remember the two women that had the car called it Lucifer though.

There are plenty of all makes in the remake of the show. I just saw it last night for the first time. I think the new Daisy Duke is a better version myself.
