93 explorer auto wont shift until warm
<hr style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" size="1"> hey all, i have a 93 explorer 4.0l automatic (with that damned push-button 4x4 that i have to fix...later) the truck has 180k (80% long run highway miles) plus on it but was maintained very well. this is the problem:
symptom:
the transmission will not shift out of first gear unless the following occurs:
the vehicle must be started, put in drive, emergency brake on, and wheels chocked for safety. it must sit in Drive until the transmission/engine heats up then it runs great.
details:
if the air temperature is over 80f or so this takes a minute or two, if the air tempt is near freezing this takes much longer. the transmission fluid appears clean, was changed with filter 20k miles ago. transmission does not slip, make noises, or have any other problems. in fact for as many miles as it has i am impressed that it runs this well.
other:
this is our #3 car, its the go for firewood and drive to work on bad snow days truck. i drive my miata whenever i can . given the high mileage and age it isn't worth a transmission rebuild. does anyone have an idea of what i should look at to fix this problem?
thanks, from a new member.
