The C4 transmission also came in vans and some cars as well. In swapping a transmission out of one of these you will need to replace the output shaft from the 2WD transmission with the one out of your 4WD transmission. The transmission itself is fairly easy to pull. I removed my crossmember after unbolting the transmission bellhousing from the engine and dropping the drivelines. I then just removed the transmission from the bottom side of the rig. For any kind of off-road situation your transmission life would be greatly improved with the addition of a shift kit and an auxilliary tranny cooler. Stock the C4 fluid was cooled by running it throuhg the radiator which is not enough if you plan to put the extra stess on it from rock crawling, racing, etc. When you replace your transmission if it is completely dry including the torque converter it should take something like 9 quarts of type F transmission fluid. Haynes manuals makes a very handy book regarding the rebuild, fluid capacities, and so forth of the ford automatic transmission. Good luck from Oregon.
Just remember swapping the output shaft is all that's required but it's the first thing in and the last out. In other words, a full rebuild teardown/build-up is required...
