1988 F250 302. Front tank not working or reading
Hi..
For a long while the front tank guage was not working but the gas was flowing with no issues. The rear tank guage reads and works fine.
I filled both tanks today and filpped to the front tanks while driving and it stalled but was able flip to the rear tank and the truck started right up.
I'm guessing the FRONT fuel pump is dead. Don't know to much about this and would like to get this fixed. Is it the pump?
Can anyone tell me how I can get the Front gauge to read as well as the front tank in working order.
Any help and advice would be appreciated.
thank you..

To fix the gauge, you need to pull the fuel pump and replace the sending unit float. The plastic ones they used in the front tanks would wear through where the float arm held them and they fill up with gas.
If you have a 1988, then you have ONE external high pressure pump and two in-tank feeder pumps that are there to prime the high pressure pump if you run the tank dry. So you need to look elsewhere for the front tank problem. I would start with the dash switch if it were me.

Thanks for the quick reply and your help.
So a bad switch could cause this from not giving gas.. Ok I'll look into changing the switch. How much do these switches go for?
If that works, that would be great. I was able to deal with the not reading the guage. I would have to bring it to the shop to have it fixed but can get an idea of how many mile I get to the tank and switch over.
Thanks

You can change the switch yourself in about 15 minutes if you can handle a screwdriver. I would get one from a junkyard. I can't seem to find one on rockauto.com, but you might have better luck.
I don't know of anyone with factory original fuel sending units from this era that have both still working. My front gauge is busted for the same reason. I just run the front tank dry and then switch to the rear where the gauge works fine.

Hey Andym.
I found a brand new genuine Ford fuel tank switch on Ebay for an 88 f250. It only cost $15.00 delivered to the door. It was a hot auction with 5 other bidder and I just happened to win.
Your right this is a hard to find part but I was lucky to find one on eBay; They had other but for 92 and up. I'll keep you posted after I install.

How can I test the F250 88 dual tank switch?
Hey Andy,
From reading my last post, I finally got my dual tank switch for my F250 88 from an auction on eBay. Not only did the shipping take 3 weeks to arrive, the seller sold me a used switch!! The aucton said NEW in original box. This was used and don't know if it's bad. I got my $$ back.
Now I have 2 switches and don't know if either are good or bad. Is there a way I can test these switches with a meter to see if I flip to the front switch it show activity or not? Again when I flip to the front, the truck dies.
Need to know how to test these switches. If they are good, then I'll go to the next step.
Many thanks ,
