I have a freshly built 460 in my 79 F350 and this is an upgrade from the 400M that it came with. L&L products all over it, Edelbrock everywhere, etc.
I have a dead spot in my acceleration curve and I am thinking that it is the ignition. If I put my foot in it, it bogs down at around 1500-2300 RPM and then jumps back in there when the secondaries engage.
If I feather the pedal into it, there are no problems.
I am thinking that I would like to try a mechanical advance distributor with a self contained ignition module so that Ih ave a very simple install. Any reccomendations or ideas?
Edelbrock everywhere? Carb? Your problem sounds like secondary air valve not opening quick enough. Edelbrock AVS has adjustable air valve. If it is conventional AFB, make sure secondary air valve is free.
I have talked with a lot of Ford people who have used the stock distributor for all types of operations. They all have the same opinion as I do, that this distributor is bullet proof. That it is as good as any of the special built billet type distributors on the market. I wouldn't waste my money changing it out. Take it to a distributor shop and have it strobed if you are in doubt about it. I had mine strobed and recurved and it works great.
I put an Edelbrock 750 cfm on my 460 and all of the dead spots disapeared. I have heard all of the rhetoric about carburation on the 460, but when I changed from the 600 cfm to the 750 it was like turning the lights on.
