New Carb Hook-up

I have a '78 Ford, with the 400 engine, and I recently replaced the carb with a new re-manufactured 2 barrel like the one that came stock. The truck runs so much better now. The only difference is, the new carb has an electric choke, whereas the old one had a hot-air choke. I get nervous around any wiring, as I am not that experienced, but I wanted to know what is the easiest way to hook the electric choke up?

I've done some searching online, and should I just hook a wire into the "Ignition" slot from the fuse box and hook it to the electric choke clip?

Is there a better way to hook this up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

It depends on if it is a 12v or 6v electric choke. If it is a Motorcraft OEM choke, it is a 6v choke and you would hook that to the 6v output on your alternator. I forget which one it is but if you have a meter, it is easy to figure out. It is probably the small screw connector on the back that doesn't have anything on it currently but you will want to double check. If it is a 12v choke (Holley and others), you can hook it into any switched 12v source. It has to be a switched source because you will burn up the choke if it is a constant hot connection. Once again, it is best to use the alternator as this is only hot when the engine is actually running not when the just the key is turned on.

you can also run a wire from the s term. on the alt. this is used by ford on many models to heat the choke. the benifit of this is that the choke only receives power while the engine is running, you should fuse the wire either way to protect the elec. system

Yes, The factory set-up uses the "S" stator wire from the alternator to power the choke. This way it only has voltage when the truck is running.

So is that a 12 volt or 6 volt source?

It's about 8V or 9V I think. It will work either choke. I have used it on 12V Holleys and Edelbrocks as well as stock Motorcrafts and it works fine for both.

The reason for the stator terminal is so the choke only gets power to it when the Engine is Running so one doesn't have to worry about burning it out or draining the battery.Plus, it's part of Ford's Design.

My 79 has a wire from the s term. on the alt. to heat the choke. the benifit of this is that the choke only receives power while the engine is running. This is how it came from the factory. I don't think it's fused. It also has a heat tube running from the exhaust manafold. Yes it has both from the factory......
