I like the free kind. this is a little beauty that I rescued. I dug it out of a field behind an abandoned farm house. I cleaned it up and attached it to a propane tank.
I have a natural gas heater w/blower thats permanenly mounted in my garage. Its probably 2' tall and 2 1/2" wide. It has a galvanized exhaust pipe that goes through the roof. Althought it probably not safe for painting (open flame covered by glass), we can get the heat up around 90 if we need it on the coldest of days here (Arkansas). I have used it to "bake" paint jobs in the past.
My 28x36 shop stays 60+ all central Illinois winter using just two of the oil filled electric space heaters. There's R40+ up top, no windows, and R14 doors. I wish the house was as tight. Stu
I have a 100,000 btu/hr ceiling hung oil fired hot air heater here on the coast of Maine. It heats my shop 22x28x10 ft high very fast. I also have the ability to direct heat into the additional bays where I keep cars and parts. I burn about 200 gallons of oil a year maintaining the shop at 45 degrees at all times and push the temp up when I am working. If you live in a cold climate you will be much more productive with heat. I work on the truck and other antique cars in the winter and play when it is warmer.
I'm looking at nat gas tubular IR heaters, no flames only heats the objects not the air.
Heat isn't as much a concern as cooling and drying the summer air. I have to also investigate a heat pump for both functions.
I love my radiate slab heat.. Had it install a few years ago at home, than upgrades the garage and my shop with it.. even on the coldest day the floor is nice and warm.. great when ur on ur back working under ur truck

I think a lift will be cheaper than radiant for me.
I had remodeled my house at the time I had it installed.. it was really a good buy.. iyts about $4 a sq ft and my garages is only 1200 sq ft .. my shop is 89000 sq ft.. but worth every cent..
I'm in California, I don't remember a time that I needed to use a heater in the garage. I do have a electric standup heater which works good on your legs. If its that cold, I usually wait for the next day when the sun comes out.
