Tim -
The operating phrase of your post is "what other DS'ers have done". I know EXACTLY what I want. Just can't find them.
I'm prepared to stay with the stock mirrors, if I can't find the ones I'm looking for. I don't think the stock ones look too bad. They just don't seem to go with the real smoothed look I'm going for on the cab. Besides, I'm tired of replacing that rubber grommet every year.
Big help, huh?
What kind of mirrors are you thinking of fabbing? How do you plan to fab them?

thanks for the replies, I am thinking of something sort of swoopy without looking like they came off of a new car. I would like the mirror head to be somewhat rounded on the back side and the stand made from teardrop shaped tubing or maybe 2 arms of round tubing. I may even make the head from a dog dish or some such thing that has just the right shape. How would FOMOCO have designed a mirror for a 1956 Lightning?

Tim,
Along time ago when "billet" was the new and exciting thing I remember reading one article by one of the builders who said making mirrors was easy, "you take a chunk of aluminum and carve away everything that doesn't look like a mirror"
Big help huh?
Have you tried looking at motorcycle accessories?? Check out all these wild choppers nowdays, some of them have some pretty crazy mirrors.
I'll probably go for the original hinge mount type on my truck, I like the old look
