Need Advice Or Opinions

Knowing that there is no shortage of either here I am looking for suggestions on outside rear view mirrors from the darkside. I don't have a problem scratch building a set but I'm interested in hearing what other DSer's have done

Tim -

The operating phrase of your post is "what other DS'ers have done". I know EXACTLY what I want. Just can't find them.

I'm prepared to stay with the stock mirrors, if I can't find the ones I'm looking for. I don't think the stock ones look too bad. They just don't seem to go with the real smoothed look I'm going for on the cab. Besides, I'm tired of replacing that rubber grommet every year.

Big help, huh?

What kind of mirrors are you thinking of fabbing? How do you plan to fab them?

Mirrors........I'm a hundred years from needing mirrors, but I hope to fab a small molded mirror, maybe on the windshield pillar. The smoother looking the better!

Just grab an idea, and keep workin it, until you get what you want!

thanks for the replies, I am thinking of something sort of swoopy without looking like they came off of a new car. I would like the mirror head to be somewhat rounded on the back side and the stand made from teardrop shaped tubing or maybe 2 arms of round tubing. I may even make the head from a dog dish or some such thing that has just the right shape. How would FOMOCO have designed a mirror for a 1956 Lightning?

I'd probably think about something like the small rectangular ones you might find on an F1 molded into the area just above the beltline. If you find that idea interesting I could shoot you a sketch.

The Champion Auto ones that Midfifty's sells are really nice but equally expensive. I've yet to find a surface mount mirror that doesn't look out of place. I'm still searching also. Good luck

I've never been accused of having an imagination so I've narrowed mine down to either the hinge pin mirrors or 4 inch peep mirrors...haven't decided on which yet.

I used repro stock mirrors. If I were doing over I think I might use the "swan" type mirrors the street rod vendors sell.

Kind of hard to see. Went through 80 plus pics and most have the standard mirror. Found this one and I do know of one other like this one but RED.

Tim,
Along time ago when "billet" was the new and exciting thing I remember reading one article by one of the builders who said making mirrors was easy, "you take a chunk of aluminum and carve away everything that doesn't look like a mirror"

Big help huh?

Have you tried looking at motorcycle accessories?? Check out all these wild choppers nowdays, some of them have some pretty crazy mirrors.

I'll probably go for the original hinge mount type on my truck, I like the old look

I,m pretty sure I,m going to use the "swan neck" mirrors as sold by "No Limit". I think they will look sharp! I,m hoping to drive over there and asking them to let me see them on something before I make a final decision.
