OKay i have an 87 XLT 2.9 2WD, and just recently it started to act oddly. First the acceleration pedel sticks when i am going from a compleat stop to moving(sticks when i try to press it, it doens't stick like to the floor). well later tonight i was driving into town and i took off from a compleate stop in first gear and i stuck then opened up fully, then something happened that never has before the engin laged to the point it felt like it was going to shut off, then backfired. this happened all night then it happen in 2ed gear. Also i have been lagging in 5th gear like the car is going to die. what should i do? i would check the feul filter but i have a full tank of gas right now so i want to try that later. Is it posible to have air in the feul rails or gas line, and if so how do i get it out what else should i do.
To check/replace the filter it shouldn't matter if the tank is full or not. Just be sure to relieve the fuel system pressure before you disconnect the lines.
Sticking throttle sounds like a sticky throttle cable. Mine stuck twice like you describe, but it was the A/T kickdown cable. Apparently you have a 5 speed so, I doubt that's it...! I'd check the throttle cable, the gas pedal pivot and the throttle body for any stickiness. If in doubt, lube everything.
thx tiger dan i think you answer my post more then anyone else lol. Well today before work i adjust the the throttle pin in a lil and i havn't had any locking today. But tom. i am doing a tear down on the upper intake and rocker covers to take a look at everything and try to line and clean things up better. so i clean the TB just incase and see if that helps. But sens eyou said the tank thing doesn't matter i will add that to my list. Sadly i think its been 3 years sense its last change recomend any type? I geuss either way i run a motorcraft of fran. And i geuss why i at advance i get the codes pulled. I just wish things were simple like back in the olden days when you just put gas in it am go hahah. ANYWAYS advance auto parts give me a college student discount hahaha sadly i didn't find out about this till tonight man to think all the money i would have save lol
When you clean the throttle body, make sure you get a can of throttle body cleaner, not just the plain old carb cleaner. The Ford throttle bodies have a clear coating on the inside that's supposed to slow down the accumulation of gunk and regular carb cleaner will dissolve that coating. As for the filter, I always use the Fram filters. I don't use their oil filters anymore but I believe they still make a good fuel filter.
Yeah i got a lovely can of that in the back room....and agree fram doesn't make a good oilfilter. The only plus they had was that sure grip thing on the botom..but after about unscrewing it 2 turns the sure grip doesn't do good covered in oil. I switched to K&n and nevered looked back. Its just amazing though how some people will go out and put the extra money for the synthetic oil but skimp on the filter becasue they seem to cost to much.
I switched to the K&N simply because I was blowing out filters when my engine was cold, and it was the only one I could find that would hold up. (I reworked my oil pump for more pressure...kinda overdid it!)
For all our other vehicles I use the Napa filters which are made by Wix, one of the best filters on the market. I've used the Napa fuel filter as well.
