E40D up in smoke

I've got 190,000 miles on my 92 F150, and I rebuilt the tranny 2 1/2 years ago, and it has ran fine.

Today, I was pulling a moderate-sized trailer, and I looked up and saw smoke boiling up from behind. I looked under the truck, and fluid was pouring out of the front of the bellhousing. The smoke was just fluid on on tailpipes, but the fluid was foaming as it hit the ground. The tranny didn't feel like it had failed or anything, and I heard no noises.

I found some other threads that mention "boiling-over". Is this the same thing? Where is the fuild coming from? Is there some sort of valve in the front pump that allows the fluid to come out when it gets too hot?

Looking at the other threads, it seems like everything can possibly still be okay after a new filter and fluid. I sure hope so.

Another thing is that I had noticed about 15 minutes before that my engine temp guage was reading a goo bit lower than normal. I though that was strange.

Been there, done that. I had the same thing happen earlier this year. Sounds like the pump seal failed, not uncommon from what I've seen. I pulled the trans, had a local shop reseal the pump and replace the bushing. The nose of the converter was chewed up a bit so I replaced that as well. Total cost: around $200, although I did the r&r myself.

Blowing fluid out the front, as Bob mentioned, is usually the front seal. However, this is usually caused by the transmission overheating and that is usually caused by the torque converter either not engaging or slipping. It will most likely stop leaking after it cools off, or at least slow significantly. If it does, go drive it and see if the converter clutch is engaging. If not, or if it is slipping noticably you will need to get it professionally diagnosed. If the leak doesn't stop or slow significantly, the pump bushing has spun and eaten up the converter neck.

Update

I changed the fluid and filter in it, and there is no leaks. The pan looked clean with no chunks of anything and only normal accumulation on the magnet.

Now, the thing isn't shifting right. It will go up to 3rd gear, and will not go into overdrive. I can hit the overdrive on/off button, and it wil go into OD then. When I slow down to a stop, it may of may not downshift. It feels confused.

Could it be the MLP/TR sensor on the side where the linkage is?

Another thing that may or may not be related is when we were binding it down on the trailer to haul it, we broke of the wire connection that goes into the top of the rear end housing. Now, the speedometer doesn't work, and the "rear abs" light is on. Could that affect the shifting of the tranny? What is that connection called, and what all does it control?

Oops! The connector on top of the rear end housing is the speed sensor. That's why your speedo doesn't work. Without the speed signal the computer doesn't know what gear to command. Fix that before you drive the truck any more.
